    Huss, relay win at Cobber Open



    MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Stacy Huss claimed the event title of the 600-meter run and ran the anchor leg of the Jackrabbits' winning 4x800-meter relay to lead a balanced South Dakota State women's track and field team during indoor competition Saturday at the Cobber Open.

    Huss, a freshman from Fort Pierre, won the 600-meter race in a time of 1 mintue, 42.88 seconds to lead a strong contingent of Jackrabbit runners in the middle distance and distance events. Huss also teamed with Claire Steinke, Kari Schaefer and Shannon Hattervig for an easy victory in the 4x800-meter relay, clocking a time of 9:41.84.

    Hattervig and Caitlin Berry each turned in runner-up individual performances. Hattervig was second in the 800-meter run in 2:26.03, while Berry was second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:58.20.

    Other Jackrabbit efforts in the distance events included fourth-place finishes by Steinke, a Moorhead native, in the mile run, 5:32.11, and Anne Stangler in the 3K, 11:25.45.

    In the sprints, Taunja Disher was the top Jackrabbit performer, placing second int he 55-meter dash in 7.60 seconds. Savanna Linderman added a pair of top-four finishes, placing third in the 200-meter dash, 26.90 seconds, and fourth in the 55-meter dash, 7.75 seconds.

    Senior Erin Zempel was third in the 55-meter hurdles, 8.52 seconds, and took fifth in the 55-meter dash, 7.76 seconds.

    In the field events, freshman Sara Ackman placed third in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 1/4 inches, and Claire Schreiner tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4-9 3/4. Schreiner placed second out of six competitors in the pentathlon Friday night with a total of 2,441 points.

    SDSU returns to action Feb. 4 with athletes competing at both the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., and the MSU Invitational in Mankato, Minn.
