Jacks split in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Steph Kuhl drove in the go-ahead run and Kim Westendorf hurled a complete-game victory as the South Dakota State University softball team opened the 2006 season with a 3-1 win over Stephen F. Austin (Texas ) at the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge Saturday morning.
The Jackrabbits were later no-hit by Northwestern State (La.) pitcher Amanda Glenn in a 6-0 loss Saturday to even the Jackrabbits' record in the round-robin tournament at 1-1.
SDSU 3, Stephen F. Austin (Texas) 1
After play was suspended due to rain in the first inning on Friday, the Jackrabbits tied the game with Stephen F. Austin at one in the bottom half of the frame as Stacey Evans walked with the bases loaded to force in Tessie Winterton.
SFA had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Carrie Woydziak reached on an infield single and later scored on a double by Julie Morse.
SDSU took the lead for good in the second inning with a two-out rally. Winterton reached on an error and then stole second. Chris Pesqueira walked and both runners moved up on an infield single by Kiley Schwedhelm. Kuhl then plated both Winterton and Pesqueira with a base hit, upping her career RBI total to 69 and move her into 10th place on the Jackrabbit career charts.
Westendorf limited SFA to just one hit over the final six innings, finishing with a three-hitter. She struck out two batters and walked one.
Schwedhelm went 2-for-2 at the plate and recorded 16 putouts at first base.
Northwestern State (La.) 6, SDSU 0
In the afternoon game, Glenn drove in a pair of runs and struck out 11 Jackrabbit batters in recording the no-hitter, despite walking six batters.
The Demons struck in the top of the first inning against SDSU freshman Jenna Marston as Margaret Patterson led off the game with a base hit, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Glenn sacrifice fly.
After adding a run in the third inning and another in the fifth on a solo home run by Glenn, the Demons ended any hopes of a Jackrabbit comeback with a three-run sixth inning. Amanda Perdue tripled in the first two runs and later scored on one of three Jackrabbit errors in the game.
Marston completed her first collegiate start, striking out three and walking two. She allowed six hits.
SDSU concludes action at the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge on Sunday with games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 1:30 p.m. and host LSU at 6 p.m.
