  • Former UNI coach disrespecting "The Barn"

Here is a story about UNI's West Gym, although I have never seen West Gym it sounds a lot like "The Barn" maybe some of the older guys can tell me if it really was better then our land mark:

Moments to remember: UNI recalls West Gym's history

By JIM SULLIVAN, Courier Sports Writer

CEDAR FALLS - Roll up the mats for a moment. Leave the volleyball net in a pile. Ignore the glass backboards. Pretend you don’t hear the muttering of the old pipes. . . .

“That was the center of all activities when I got here,” said Iradge Ahrabi-Fard, who arrived at Iowa State Teachers College in 1960 as a student and later became UNI’s highly successful volleyball coach.

Finally, the West Gym was home to the fans, the people who seemed to go nose-to-nose with the opposition in the 2,000-seat area. Close to the action, they offered support to their Panthers, suggestions to the officials and problems to any stranger who appeared in the doorway.

Said Bobbi Petersen, who played in the West Gym for UNI and then coached the women’s volleyball team when it rang up a home winning streak of 74 consecutive matches, “The West Gym has allowed those fans to be close to the action and feel a part of what is going on out on the court. It can be very intimidating, coming into an atmosphere where the fans are right on top of you.”

One thing about home in the real world - kids grow up and leave. It’s no different in college athletics, even for a inanimate building like the West Gym. . . .

The initial cost for building the Men’s Gymnasium? Roughly $250,000, according to the Witthoft/Peterson history.

By modern standards, a little more than 2,000 seats may not seem like much. During the West Gym’s heyday, it seemed relatively spacious.

When we played South Dakota State and South Dakota, our place was a lot better than theirs,” said Zeke Hogeland, who played basketball at UNI and coached the men’s team from 1967 through 1973. . . .

Just curious, how many could our old barn sit back in the day. Looking at it now my guess is that the raquetball courts weren't there. However if sat a thousand people I would be relatively surprised.

I've been checking the Gymnasium/Armory (The Barn) was built in 1918 for a cost of $80,000. I found some fun old pics, but haven't found the seating cap. yet.

According to Dr. John Miller in his book South Dakota State University A Pictorial History 1881-2006 and I quote "Playing in "the Barn," with 3,000 screaming fans and constantly ringing cowbells, gave the Jacks a decided home court advantage over their opponents."

Does anyone know if that giant cowbell is still around? If not they need to get one made and get it in the student section. The "Rooter King", I love it.

A few years ago I remember some student's clanging a cowbell of that size.

The seating of the SDSC Fieldhouse aka the Barn was about 3000 to 3500. I have never been to Cedar Falls so have no information on the West Gym.

I know Norm Stewart, UNI Coach, did not like playing in Brookings. UNI never had fans either and when SDSU played down there, we may have had a few alums show up but doubt if would have been much room for visiting fans. Stewart was the coach who proceeded Zeke Hogeland, and went from UNI to Missouri.

I dont think they ever used turnstiles so its hard to say what the offical attendance count would have been. I would think 3000 to 3500 would probably be accurate. The Barn had a balcony and end bleachers at the end of the court for the Augie and USD games.  One section at mid court was used for the band, which was much larger than our current pep band, and probably not as audiable as the current band.

I can recall some games where maybe playing UND and NDSU where there was near sellouts, but it was due to the quality of the team we had on the floor. NDSU and UND did not have much of following coming to the Barn as I-29 was non-exisitent.

The last time I saw the big Cow Bell was in the trophy case at Frost, and also the cheer team used it for at least one game recently, maybe two or three years ago.

Hey 89, where can I find that book? I just bought "College on the Hill" and I absolutely love it!

Besides, Doc Miller was my favorite History Prof.

Regretfully, I only had Sweeny for one class, but he was a hoot.

I'll never forget the message on his door "I can imagine a country where there is no fighting and everyone lives in peace and harmony.

And I can see us conquering that country because they'd never expect it!"

Seems like the first game was against USD which we lost.

At Oklahoma St in Stillwater, until recently they had a arena that sat less than what  Frost currently holds, namely now about 8000.  I am told they took the roof off of their old basketball arena and built higher walls for more seating and now have a much larger arena.

Maybe it's a long way off, but I could see that same thing being done with Frost unless down the road they find it cheaper start over with a whole new facility. Eventually I think we will out grow the Frost as we did with the Barn. Its seems hard to believe considering the past two years, but it will pick up with a better product on the floor.

BTW NDSU Grad, Reuben Jack Frost for whom the facility is named was a great AD and a fairly good basketball coach at SDSU, was blessed with five or six daughters, but no women's basketball during their college years.
Guess what state Frost grew up in? A clue, its north of South Dakota. ;D
