    BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State University wrestling team will close out its season this week with matches against Northern State, Northern Iowa and American University.

    The Jacks, who had their match against North Dakota State postponed last Friday, will take on Northern State Wednesday night at Frost Arena. The first match will begin at 7 p.m. No makeup date has been announced for the NDSU match.

    SDSU will then travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face nationally ranked UNI. Start time for the match is set for 6 p.m. at the West Gym on Northern Iowa’s campus. South Dakota State will close its season with a home match against American University Sunday afternoon. The match, which marks Senior Day for the Jacks, will begin at 2 p.m. at Frost Arena.

      Good question. Why was it postponed to begin with? Bucky Maughn has done this before especially when he has a feeling of defeat coming on.

          Panthers upend Jacks in Wrestling

          CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The South Dakota State University wrestling team dropped a 36-9 match Friday night to No. 25-ranked Northern Iowa at the West Gymnasium in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

          Cody Nehl, a senior from Watauga, put the Jacks on the board at 197-pounds by defeating Andrew Anderson 7-3. Nehl used a takedown with 1 minute, 26 seconds left in the third and riding time to secure the victory. Nehl has been victorius in 11 of his last 12 matches.

          Elk Point native Derek Pirner closed out the scoring for the Jacks by making quick work of C.J. Ettelson. The sophomore pinned Ettelson 48 seconds into the match. Ettelson was the 19th rated 141-pound wrestler in the nation according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Since moving from the 133-pound weight class to the 141-pound class, Pirner has gone 10-1 in competition.

          SDSU dropped to 7-10 on the year, while Northern Iowa improved to 6-8-2.

          South Dakota State will close its season Sunday with a home match against American University. The match, which marks Senior Day for the Jacks, will begin at 2 p.m. at Frost Arena.

            Nehl leads Jacks against American

            BROOKINGS, S.D. — The American University (Washington, D.C.) wrestling team won eight matches, including three by fall Sunday afternoon to upend South Dakota State 38-9 at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.

            Watauga native Cody Nehl closed out the match for the Jacks by defeating Tyler Flatt 6-0. The senior used a takedown and riding time in the third to win his final match as a Jackrabbit. Nehl, who finished the year being victorius in 12 of his last 13 matches, brought his overall record to 15-4 with the win.

            Dusty Kavitz, a sophomore from Medford, Minn., won by forfeit at 141-pounds.

            SDSU finished the season with a 7-11 record, while American University improved to 12-6 in dual action.

            The loss brought SDSU’s home record to 4-3 on the year and marked the final match for Nehl and Chad Herrboldt.

              Wrestling Wins Eight Matches by Bonus Points in 38-9 Win over South Dakota State

              Three Eagles win by fall, five win by major decision

              WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team won eight matches by bonus points Sunday afternoon in a 38-9 dismantling of South Dakota State on the road. Three Eagles won by fall and five won by major decision as AU lost only match they contested.

              Adam LoPiccolo (Glen Rock, Pa./Glen Rock) started the match off with his 20th win of the year by fall in the first period. Matt Morkel (Omaha, Neb./Skutt) and Jordan Lipp (Beachwood, Oh./Beachwood) pushed AU's lead to 14-0, both winning by major decision. Lipp has now won 10 of his last 11 matches.

              After an American forfeit at 141, Tom Kniezewski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored his second pin in as many matches for his 21st win of the year. Christopher Stout (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy), Rudy Rueda (Waldorf, Md./DeMatha) and Dwayne Hash-Barberis (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) followed with major decision victories to clinch the match for AU.

              Like Kniezewski at 149, No. 1 Josh Glenn (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) won by fall for the second time in as many matches pushing his record to 26-1 on the year. Glenn lead the EIWA in pins with 17 on the year.

              With the win, the Eagles move to 12-6 on the year in duals. Tomorrow they face off against North Dakota State in their last dual of the year before the EIWA Tournament, which takes place in two weeks.
