Garrigues makes more history at Mid-Con meet

INDIANAPOLIS -- South Dakota State freshman swimmer Mark Garrigues had a hand in five record-setting performances during the Mid-Continent Conference Championships Friday night.

A native of Yakima, Wash., Garrigues set three individual school records and swam the lead leg on a pair of school-record relays. Garrigues opened the meet by leading off the SDSU 200 medley relay, teaming with Cade Roberts, Justin Manning and Brandon Maydew for a school-record time of 1:38.22 as the Jackrabbits placed fourth.

Garrigues then moved to the 400 individual medley, where he set the school mark for the second time in less than 12 hours. His finals time of 4:05.91 was good for a runner-up finish, bettered his time in the preliminaries by a second and shattered the previous Jackrabbit standard of 4:09.86 set by Bo Meredith in 1998.

The biggest splash of the night came in the evening's final event, the 800 freestyle relay. Leading off for the Jackrabbits, Garrigues' split times of 47.89 seconds for 100 yards and 1:42.49 for 200 yards both qualified as new school records. The quartet of Garrigues, Manning, Maydew and Roberts also established a school record of 7:05.32 en route to a fourth-place finish.

In other individual events, freshman Josh Mueller placed 12th in the 100 butterfly, 53.78 seconds, and Manning was 12th in the 100 backstroke, 56.57 seconds. Tony Brown also swam in the 400 IM, finishing 13th in 4:33.08

Roberts continued his strong championships with a ninth-place effort and season-best time of 1:00.07. Maydew placed 11th in 1:01.42.

The Jackrabbit men fell out of a tie for fourth place after the first day of competition to seventh place. Oakland (Mich.) was a firm hold on the top spot with 692 points, followed by host IUPUI with 296 points and Eastern Illinois with 270.

Competition wraps up Saturday at the IU Natatorium.

Onisk sets pair of Jackrabbit marks

INDIANPOLIS, Ind. -- Freshman Mallory Onisk added to her collection of South Dakota State school records with a pair of new standards Friday night at the Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

A native of Bear, Del., Onisk lowered her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a runner-up time of 57.79 seconds in Friday night's finals. For Onisk it was her second runner-up finish of the three-day championships, having placed second in the 200 individual medley on Thursday.

Onisk upper her individual school-record total to five by leading off the Jackrabbits' 800 freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.63 for her 200-yard split, surpassing the previous mark of 2:00.93 set last year by teammate Heather Youngberg. The Jackrabbits ended up finishing seventh in the relay with a time of 8:11.35.

Four other Jackrabbits swam in the consolation finals Friday night. Mariah Pavlicek finished ninth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.28, while Youngberg finished in a tie for 11th at 1:02.99. Kim Iverson turned in a season-best time of 1:09.63 to take 11th in the 100 breaststroke and Chelsea Colborn placed 16th in the 200 freestyle, 2:03.91.

SDSU slipped into seventh place in the team standings out of seven teams. Oakland (Mich.) holds a commanding lead with 643 points, followed by Eastern Illinois with 361.5 and Western Illinois with 353.

Competition concludes Saturday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. Eastern Time and finals at 6:30 p.m. ET.

SDSU men close Mid-Con meet with three records

INDIANAPOLIS -- South Dakota State University freshman swimmers Josh Mueller and Mark Garrigues, along with the Jackrabbit 400 freestyle relay team, established new school records during the final session of competition at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships Saturday night.

Mueller, a Sioux Falls native, clocked a school-record time of 16 minutes, 41.90 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle to finish sixth overall. His time bettered the previous mark of 16:49.10 set by Mike Adelman in 2001.

Garrigues, from Yakima, Wash., established a new Jackrabbit record in the 100 freestyle for the second night in a row. After tying with Kevin Boyle of Eastern Illinois with a time of 47.44 seconds in the preliminaries, the two swam against each other to determine who would claim the eighth and last spot for the event finals. In the swim-off, Garrigues blazed to another record time of 46.42 seconds to earn a spot in the finals.

During the evening session, Garrigues moved up to sixth with a time of 47.04 seconds.

Garrigues, who set four individual records during the three-day meet and was named to the all-Mid-Continent Conference Second Team, also swam the anchor leg on the Jackrabbits' 400 medley relay, which closed out the meet by erasing an 11-year-old SDSU record. The quartet of Cade Roberts, Bryce Sinclair, Brandon Maydew and Garrigues posted a time of 3:13.47.

Overall, the Jackrabbit men set eight school records during the three-day championships, including three in the relay events.

Other individuals to swim in consolation finals Saturday night were: Andrew Maydew, 14th in the 200 breaststroke, 2:18.95; Andrew Cottrell, 14th in the 200 backstroke, 2:09.51, and Jason Kassa, 15th in the 200 backstroke, 2:10.30.

Oakland (Mich.) won the seven-team meet by doubling up its nearest competition. The Golden Grizzlies tallied 1,013 points, followed by IUPUI with 480. SDSU totaled 254 points to finish seventh, 49 points behind Valparaiso (Ind.) for sixth place.

SDSU women sixth at Mid-Con Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- South Dakota State freshman Mallory Onisk set her fourth individual school record of the weekend during Saturday’s final session of the Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

Onisk, a native of Bear, Del., lowered her own record time in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking a runner-up time of 2 minutes, 5.93 seconds. For Onisk, it was her third runner-up finish of the three-day championships after record-setting performances in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly earlier in the meet. A member of the all-Mid-Continent Conference Second Team, she also established a new standard in the 200 freestyle during relay competition.

The Jackrabbit women closed out the meet by setting a new school mark in the 400 freestyle relay as Onisk, Mariah Pavlicek, Chelsea Colborn and Heather Youngberg combined for a sixth-place time of 3:42.18. Their placing and seventh school record of the meet helped secure sixth place in the team standings for SDSU, which moved ahead of Valparaiso (Ind.) on Saturday.

Pavlicek was the only other Jackrabbit woman to swim in an individual event final on Saturday, placing seventh in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.59. Three other SDSU swimmers swam in the consolation final: Hannah Ferree, 10th in 2:20.75; Colborn, 11th in 2:21.81, and Claire Graff, 16th in 2:27.70.

Also swimming in consolation finals Saturday night were Kim Iverson, 13th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:37.97, and Youngberg, who tied for 15th in the 100 freestyle at 55.91 seconds.

Oakland (Mich.) handily earned the team title with 970 points. Eastern Illinois was second with 583.5 points and Western Illinois was third with 548. The Jackrabbits finished with 241.5 points, 18 points ahead of Valparaiso.
