Schanaman leads Jacks at Snowshoe Open
MINNEAPOLIS -- Nick Schanaman turned in a runner-up performance in the 60-meter hurdles to lead the South Dakota State University men's indoor track and field team in competition Friday night at the Gold Country Showshoe Open.
A sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., Schanaman posted the top time in the preliminaries at 8.21 seconds, then clocked a season-best time of 8.11 seconds in the finals. He was edged at the line by .01 seconds by Marcus Walgrave of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Freshman Jared Bienlien paced the Jackrabbits in the distance events, placing fourth in the developmental 3,000-meter run with a time of 8 minutes, 53 seconds. SDSU head coach Rod DeHaven competed in the open 3,000, placing third in 8:28.14.
In the field events, Cameron Johnson and Andrew Duitsman each took seventh in jumping events. Johnson placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 8 1/4 inches, while Duitsman posted a top mark of 38-8 1/4 in the triple jump.
Pole vaulter Tyler Schiferl was 10th at 14-6.
The Jackrabbit women will compete in the Minnesota Parents' Day Classic in Minneapolis on Saturday. Both the men's and women's squads are scheduled to compete Feb. 25 at the Bison Classic in Fargo, N.D.
