Jacks beat Badgers, advance at Buzz Classic
MARIETTA, Ga. -- Steph Kuhl drove home Tessie Winterton with the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning and Kim Westendorf pitched a complete game as South Dakota State knocked off Wisconsin 3-2 Saturday night, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Buzz Classic.
The Jackrabbits, 5-4 overall, earned the final spot in the 12-team single-elimination portion of the tournament by compiling a 2-2 record in pool play. In earlier action Saturday, SDSU lost to Virginia 5-2 in eight innings, before rebounding to defeat St. Joseph’s (Pa.) 3-1.
SDSU will face fourth-seeded and host Georgia Tech in quarterfinal action at 9 a.m. Eastern Time Sunday. The winner will face the winner of No. 1 Minnesota and No. 9 Radford (Va.) in semifinal action at 11 a.m. ET.
Virginia 5, SDSU 2 (8 inn.)
Amy McKean hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Virginia to a 5-2 victory, handing SDSU its second consecutive defeat in extra innings.
The Jackrabbits, who lost in 10 innings Friday afternoon to Oklahoma State, struck first as Steph Kuhl led off the second inning with her third home run of the season. The junior third baseman from Logan, Iowa, also took over sole possession of third place on the Jackrabbit career home run list with her 13th career round-tripper.
The Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. Jessica Taylor reached on a bunt single and Brooke Sorber followed with a two-run homer off SDSU pitcher Kim Westendorf.
Kuhl, who had two of SDSU's four hits, started a two-out rally by the Jackrabbits in the fifth inning with a base hit. Pinch-runner Brooke Postma stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Chris Pesqueira and came around to score on an errant throw from the outfield.
The Jackrabbits failed to take advantage of wildness from the Cavalier pitching staff, which issued six walks and hit two batters. SDSU stranded 12 base-runners in the game, including runners in scoring position each of the last four innings.
Erin Horn pitched two hitless innings to pick up the victory in relief for Virginia. She struck out two and walked one. Starter Madi Gore worked the first six innings, striking out five and walking five.
Westendorf went the distance as she evened her record at 3-3.The sophomore right-hander struck out four and walked one, while giving up seven hits.
SDSU 3, St. Joseph's (Pa.) 1
Freshman Jenna Marston struck out 11 St. Joseph’s batters over five innings to earn her first collegiate victory as the Jackrabbits won 3-1 and secured the final spot in the 12-team tournament field.
SDSU scored all its runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Kuhl walked. Pesqueira followed with an infield single to move pinch-runner Brooke Postma to second base. After Stacey Evans walked to load the bases, Ivy Ramos plated Postma with a base hit and two more runs scored on a Hawks' error.
With Westendorf on in relief to start the sixth inning inside the circle for the Jackrabbits, St. Joseph's mounted a comeback attempt. Dani Gonzales greeted Westendorf with a double and Rachel Pawlikowski followed with an RBI. However, Westendorf got out the inning without further damage and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn her first save of the season.
The Jackrabbits had only three hits in the game -- singles by Pesqueira, Ramos and Brittany Postma. SJU pitcher Lauren Cognigni struck out 10 SDSU hitters and walked three.
SDSU 3, Wisconsin 2 (8 inn.)
Playing their third extra-inning game of the Buzz Classic, the Jackrabbits scratched out a run in the top of the eighth to eliminate fifth-seeded Wisconsin, 3-2.
With the international tie-breaker in effect, Winterton began the inning at second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kiley Schwedhelm. Kuhl then stepped to the plate and hit an infield grounder, but the throw to get Winterton at the plate was too late, giving SDSU the lead for good.
The Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Pesqueira singled with two outs and scored on a double by Kassy Hernandez.
Wisconsin grabbed a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Theresa Boruta.
However, SDSU tied the game in the top of seventh as Pesqueira led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on a throwing error by Badger pitcher Eden Brock. Pesqueira was later thrown out at home on a grounder back to Brock, but freshman Brittany Postma delivered a key two-out single to score pinch-runner Teresa Howell.
Westendorf improved to 4-3 in recording her fifth complete game of the season. She retired all three batters she faced in the bottom of the eighth, including recording one of her eight strikeouts. She walked one and scattered seven hits.
Pesqueira and Hernandez each went 3-for-4 to lead SDSU’s 10-hit attack. Brittany Postma added a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
