Phoenix College softball sophomore Denise Leon recently verbally committed to continue her collegiate career at South Dakota State University.
Leon, who has started at second base the past two seasons, this month will sign a national letter of intent to play for Shane Bouman's team.
She played in 60 games her freshman season, batting .391 with 70 hits, 10 doubles, three triples, one home run and 30 RBIs in 179 at bats, with 21 walks and just six strikeouts. She was named to the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference's third team.
Leon, who attended Washington High School, is sixth in the nation with 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts this season.
She is the fifth Phoenix College sophomore to verbally commit to continue her softball career at a four-year institution next season, joining catcher Lindsay Kelso (Memphis), pitcher Roxanne Bejarano (San Jose State), pitcher Sarah Moder (University of Mary-North Dakota) and center fielder Casey Wheeler (Minnesota).
