SDSU Winning Recruiting Battle for State's Students

South Dakota State University is the choice of nearly half of the 2005 South Dakota high school graduates now attending one of the state’s six public institutions.

Of the 2,213 freshmen from South Dakota that are in the state’s system, 1,019 are enrolled at SDSU. The next closest is the University of South Dakota, with 510. SDSU is also winning the recruiting effort in the state’s largest county of Minnehaha. Of the 428 freshmen from Minnehaha County enrolled in the state system, 243 are at SDSU. The remaining 185 are spread among the other state schools. It’s estimated that by 2010, 40% of the state’s high school graduates will reside in Minnehaha County.

Exactly. We need to continue with this momentum. In addition we also get the majority of the brightest students as noted in previous posts regarding state funded scholarships.

I love the ignorant and snobish USD contingent that makes underhanded comments about the biggest, best and only DI institution is the state. They are in the minority and that suits them just fine.

Actually, USD has a promise scholarship that is very similar to our JG scholarhship. SDSMT doesn't have an official program but does just as well awarding those students scholarships. Dakota State and Northern have two programs that are even a little better for the student that our guarantee as well. There is no doubt that the JG help attract students but of the South Dakota students mentioned, they have that same choice at almost all of the state assisted institutions. I would say you can attribute these numbers to the quality institution that SDSU is and the direction the university is going more than the scholarship money that is given.
