BB: Minnesota Blanked by Michigan 2-0 in Series Finale
    April 9, 2006 -

The Minnesota baseball team (14-13, 3-5) dropped three out of four to Michigan (16-11, 4-4), as it was blanked for a second day in a row by a duplicate score of 2-0 on Sunday, Apr. 9 at the Metrodome.

It marks the first time since 2002 that Minnesota has lost a home series in Big Ten play. That came when the Golden Gophers dropped two out of three in an abbreviated series three-game series against Illinois on Apr. 19-20, 2002 at Siebert Field. Minnesota had gone 15 straight home series with either a split or a series win (12-0-3) in that span. . . .

Minnesota will play a midweek road game as it heads to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on South Dakota State on Wednesday, Apr. 12 at 6:30 p.m. That game will be webcast on gophersports.com. The Golden Gophers will then head to Iowa City for a four-game Big Ten series against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Minnesota will face Iowa on Friday, Apr. 14 at 6 p.m., in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 2 p.m. and in the series finale on Sunday, Apr. 16 at 1 p.m.

If it wasn't a mid-week game I would suck back a few cold ones with you.  I checked the weather and it looks like it is going to be a great night for baseball.  Wish I could be there.   :'(

        Go State!

P.S.  Nice to pick up the win over DWU today, Jake Rogers hit for the cycle! 8-) Hopefully we can take a little MO into tomorrow's game.

The weather sounds much improved over the rainy cool day we had for the Gopers last year.  Maybe for the Independent tourney in May we can try a couple of  [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif]

I'm in for the Saturday game of the tourney for sure, although I may have my young Rabbit in tow (it will depend on when we play).  If he is with me I will be spending time in the "Fun Zone" rather then the Beer Garden.  Is the Beer Garden open during College games?

Unfortunately they did not serve last year and would guess that would be the same this year.  One can hope though. ;D

You know they sell beer at Wichita State baseball games. In a couple of weeks I am taking customers to see Kansas State play the Shockers at Eck Stadium and we will probably have a barley pop or two.

SDSU baseball to host Gophers in city today

South Dakota State’s baseball team will host the University of Minnesota today at Sioux Falls Stadium. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Kirby Morsching (2-0) is scheduled to start for SDSU (12-16), which defeated Dakota Wesleyan 10-6 on Tuesday. Minnesota is 14-13 after dropping three of four to Michigan on the weekend.

It is the first time this season that the Jackrabbits have played at Sioux Falls Stadium. They have two other regular-season dates in Sioux Falls: May 16-17, both against Kansas State. SDSU also will host the Division I Independent tourney May 18-21 in Sioux Falls.

This will be the first of two meetings between SDSU and Minnesota this season. SDSU visits the Gophers on April 26.

Last year SDSU was 0-2 against Minnesota, including a 19-13 loss in 10 innings in Sioux Falls.

SDSU rallied to beat DWU as Jake Rogers hit for the cycle. He doubled to lead off the first, tripled to drive in a run in the fourth, hit a two-run homer in the sixth and singled in the seventh.

Tyson Fisher and Chris Iverson had three hits each. Fisher extended his hitting streak to 16 games and scored three times while Iverson had an RBI single in the first, a two-run double in the third and an RBI single in the sixth. SDSU’s 16 hits also included a triple and single by Brian Estes. . . . (read more)

Minnesota breaks 11-11 tie in 9th

It was another slugfest between the South Dakota State Jackrabbits and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers on the baseball diamond.

But like last year's meeting of the two teams, this game went the Gophers' way in the late innings.

Minnesota broke an 11-11 tie in the top of the ninth with a five run outburst to get the 16-11 win Wednesday at the Sioux Falls Stadium.

A year ago, the Gophers won 19-13 in a 10-inning contest.

"To beat a team like Minnesota, we have to play better and minimize our mistakes," SDSU manager Reggie Christiansen said. "We're still a young team - we threw four freshmen out there tonight, and we only have three seniors on the team. And the only way we're going to get better is to have them play." . . . (read more)

                          From SDSU site:

Gophers Score Six In Sixth, Top Jacks 9-2

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Minnesota took the lead with a six-run sixth inning and went on to defeat South Dakota State 9-2 in baseball action at the Metrodome Wednesday night.

The Jacks had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning and starter Caleb Thielbar shutout the Gophers for four innings before giving up a solo homer to Chris Herbert.

But when the bullpen took over in the sixth, outs became something hard to come by for the Jackrabbit defense. Thielbar gave up three hits, one walk and three strikeouts and left with a 2-1 lead but six pitchers paraded to the mound from the pen.

Christian Larson came on in the sixth, faced four batters and didn’t get anyone out. Jake Angier pitched two-thirds of an inning but like Larson was touched for three runs before Dalton Decker got the final out. It was a pinch hit single by Kyle Baran which drove in two runs to give the Gophers the lead.

And the Gophers picked up in the seventh where they left off. Baran tripled to drive in a run in the seventh when he also scored.

Jake Rogers led off the game with a homer for the Jacks, and SDSU added a second first-inning score. Tyson Fisher and Nick Adams singled before Justin Morar walked to load the bases. Fisher scored on a sacrifice fly by Cal Lewis.

Rogers and Adams had two hits each for the Jacks.

Minnesota is now 21-17 while SDSU dropped to 18-22. The Jacks have a three game series against Creighton in Omaha starting Friday.
