  • Best memory from an SDSU athletic event?

I will say from my playing days, when we as a baseball program beat UNO in an elimination game down in Omaha. We won on a walk-off home run from Greg Geary, in a game that went twelve innings and lasted till near midnight. If I was saying from a fans perspective, it would have to have been the Fort Hays region championship game in Frost. The crowd was loud and it was a crazy atmosphere. I was just wondering what other great games or individual performances stand out? Since athletics are winding down for the spring and summer I thought this would be a great time to rehash some of those memories.

The finish of the first Dakota Marker game with NDSU is the most memorable in recent times for me.  Talk about never-say-die!  The video of the final couple of minutes should be played in the lockerroom once in a while as a lesson on why anything can happen even though it looked pretty bleak.

I would concur with that game... and any touchdown run of Josh Ranek!

Watching Mark Tetzlaff play (when I was a young boy) and also break the NCC scoring record and play against the Cal-State team in the Regionals. He was from my hometown and his Mom was my 1st grade teacher. So anytime I got to watch him play was memorable.

There are so many. A couple that stand out are Sizek making the 3 pointer to send the semifinal game against Bentley into OT. Two nights later when the women won the championship.
Although we lost the game, the Regional championship in Hays, Kansas was one of the best basketball I've ever seen an SDSU team play. FHSU ended up National Champs at 34-0. The officals let Tom Rops and Alonzo Gholston go at each other the whole night. Even in a loss, many from FHSU were impressed with the Jacks.
Like I said, there are so many.

Another recent one: Brad Lowery's attempt to run a 4-minute mile at the 2005 Howard Wood Dakota Relays. In a strong wind, led by a teammate acting as a 'rabbit' for the first 800 meters, Brad electrified the crowd with a 4:01 effort, a new meet, track, SDSU and all-time State Collegiate record. More than 10,000 screaming fans were with him on the home stretch fighting the headwind. You had to be there to fully appreciate the scene and the effort.

Afew more recent ones. Greg Geary becoming the all-time Home Run leader. Jake Rogers hitting for the Cycle. Ole becoming the single season and career leader in Saves.

Re: Best memory from an SDSU athletic event?

My favorites have mostly been the playoffs inside Frost Arena. They were all "Fire Marshall Specials" with the building just stuffed with people. It would be -10 outside and it seemed like 90+ inside.

My favorites in no particular order:

                1. Watching Tetz school the bigger/stronger players with quickness and uncoventional style (haven't seen it since!)

                2. Beating Fort Hayes before losing to Colorado. You could see it in the eyes of the Fort Hayes players, they were done before tip off.

                3. Any of the classic USD/SDSU battles!

                4. '85 Regional Semi-Finals. California school that played the first game had one caucasian player. They were up big and he was only player not play. He never even took his warm-up off. The crowd started yelling for him. "Let Jerry play, Let Jerry play!" The coach laughed and put him in. He missed a couple of shots and then finally hit a bucket. You'd have thought the Jacks hit a buzzer-beater to win everyone cheered so loud. HILARIOUS!!!! Needless to say, Jerry didn't play in the final and the Jacks went on to be Runner-up at the Elite 8!

                5. SDSU over USD when the 'Yotes were #1 in football.

Could go on for hours! Great memories!

                  Not in any order....but.....

Watching King Ling and Winzenberg play

Tommy McDonald launch one from the moon.

Watching Tetz, Schultz, Ladoucer, play together and having AY(Arvis Young) come off the bench and down the baseline for a dunk to get the crowd going. Everyone had a part to play that year.

Great memories jaxfan, I just want to throw in watching Wordlaw passing the ball to AY for those dunks and want to include Walker along with Lingenfelter and Winzenburg in a great frontline.

How many threes do you think Tommy McDonald would have had??? He used to shoot it three, four, five feet beyond the arc before the arc was there!!! Still think we got hosed when he got shoved out of bounds in the final seconds of the title game!

                      Good Stuff!

Watching Sempsrott and Norberg play defense together was awesome! They just new where each other was and almost never had to call a switch.

Speaking of Sepmsrott, how about having a 5-6 point lead with five minutes to go and giving him the ball and just letting him dribble around until fouled and then hitting 90+% off free throws. Man, we could use another diamond-in-the-rough like that again!

                        Those were some great years!

In an earlier post, I stated that there were so many. One that I did not see, but listened to Norm Hilsen do play-by-play on was Dave Thomas with the single game scoring record against Coe College of Iowa. Thomas has 44 points in the game. He and Lee Colburn may have been the best pair of forwards any Jacks team has ever had. Watching Chris White and his explosive on the court were real treats also.

Steve Brown had range out to 30 plus feet. Not kidding. He would have averaged at least five 3's per game.

Thomas and Colburn were seniors my freshman year...the first half of their senior season was in the barn and the second half was in Frost Arena (can you believe this: Frost was so dead the coach threatened to go back to the Barn!  ... and now, Frost is one of the great venues).

In those days, there was no three-point shot and a dunk drew a technical foul.  Steve Brown had some memorable performances--you could lock him in a closet in Scobey Hall and he'd still make the shot.

One thing is certain:  The Jacks have had countless memorable events and our votes are affected by what we saw and when we were at SDSU.  I'm confident future Jacks will have their own set of great memories.
