Jacks enter final week of baseball season

The South Dakota State University baseball team wraps up play for the 2006 season with a series of games in Sioux Falls.

The Jackrabbits, 21-25 overall, open the week with a two-game series against Kansas State. Tuesday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. start, with Wednesday's game beginning at 3 p.m.

SDSU will then host the six-team Division I Independent Tournament May 18-21. The Jackrabbits open play against Utah Valley State at 7:30 p.m. on the 18th.

All games will be played at Sioux Falls Stadium.

I'll be there Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

I hope they are not to rusty with the lay-off. Against K-State we can see how far we have come since March. The baseball team has good team speed and hitting. The pitching is young and will keep developing.

K-State is coming into their game with us on a tie, it is their second tie of the season. :-?

Cats and Aggies Battle to 1-1 Tie

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Josh Stinson’s two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at one as Kansas State and Texas A&M battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in a rain-shortened game at Olsen Field, eliminating the Wildcats from the 2006 Big 12 Tournament. The game was called after six innings after a rain delay and a predetermined curfew to accommodate Kansas State’s travel plans.

The Wildcats were just one out away from picking up the win and keeping their Big 12 Tournament hopes alive, but a single, a fielder’s choice and Stinson’s double scored the tying run. Pinch hitter Jess Buenger then flied out to left to end the game and give the Wildcats their second tie of the season. . . .

Kansas State continues its current road trip with two midweek games against South Dakota State Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday’s game in Sioux Falls will begin at 6 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. (read more)

I gotta say that I am a little disappointed that the Argus didn't run a story about Kansas State coming to Sioux Falls tonight to take on our Jackrabbits. It is not everyday that a Big XII team comes to the Granite City.

It doesn't surprise me. Other than Solari, who has been good for us, I'm not sure any of the others would be able to find Brookings. You could probably even put them in car on I29 going north and they would still have trouble.

We have to do a better job of getting the word out about events like these in the city of Sioux Falls. We need the media market and the fans. As for this week, a great finish to the season would be great momentum for recruiting and a great send off for the seniors. It would be great for the RPI if we could take one of two from K-state.

Ouch 21-5, not a great start to the week. Not hard to figure out what the most important part of baseball is. Pitching, hopefully our starters can pick up the slack the rest of the week and leave what happened in the rear view mirror. Time to go and get that split and get things rolling the right way for the tourney.

Re: Big week for Jackrabbit Baseball

I was surprised that Klous was pitching and when he let things get out of hand, to Coach Christiansen credit he used mostly the "back" of the bullpen to get though the rest of the game.  Sure it inflated the score (and allowed K-State to tie a record for HRs), but it saved the better arms for the games that matter.  Today is another day, and the Jackrabbits competed well against Kansas State in the two games I watched in Manhattan so hopefully things will turn around.

Reggie Christiansen has one thing in mind for South Dakota State's baseball team at this weekend's Division I Independent tournament - win the whole darn thing.

Of course, the other five teams coming to Sioux Falls have that exact same goal as play begins today.

"The tournament is what's important to us," Christiansen said. "It's our end-of-the-year type of a conference tournament, if you will." . . . (read more)
