SARATOGA AT LITTLE FALLS, postponed, rain (June 9)
LITTLE FALLS — Mother nature rained on the Little Falls Diamond Miners’ parade Friday and washed away the team’s much-anticipated debut at Veterans Memorial Park.
The rain set in just as the team was preparing for its pregame opening night ceremonies and fell throughout a parade of Little Leaguers and the Little Falls High School marching band’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
The Diamond Miners and the Saratoga Phillies were introduced to the crowd but the teams never took the field. The game was called off after a rain delay of approximately 45 minutes. Tentative plans call for the teams to make the game up as part of a doubleheader Monday when they meet in Saratoga. . . .
On the field, the Diamond Miners will be getting to know each other along with the fans. A tight schedule and uncooperative weather have limited the players’ and coaches’ opportunities to work out in preparation for the 44-game season.
“We haven’t had an opportunity to do a lot,” said coach Kevin Tucker who arrive in Little Falls Wednesday, “but I’m anxious to get out on the field and play.” . . .
Tucker has tabbed South Dakota State’s Matt Bowman as his opening-night starter. Bowman went 3-7 with a 4.85 ERA this spring and completed four of his 11 starts for the Jackrabbits. He struck out 48 batters and walked 20 in 72 1/3 innings. He pitched eight innings on two days’ rest and earned the victory South Dakota State’s season finale against New York Tech. . . . (read more)
Best of luck to Matt this summer.
