  • Big Sky Conference - Any news?

Was sitting around with a couple of Jackrabbit fans last night having a brew [smiley=beer.gif] and one of them asked if there was anything new from the Big Sky.

It would seem to me that now that the Mid-Con has announced a site visit to SDSU and NDSU, it might force the Big Sky into making a decision. After all, they have all of the information on our schools from a year ago.

Is it possible that they will make a quick decision and invite us for membership before the Mid-Con has finished site visits and formally invited us?

Well, since the message out of the last Big Sky meeting was that they didn't really even discuss further expansion, I don't think we need to worry about the Big Sky any more, except to beat their teams whenever and wherever we meet them.

In my never-to-be-humbled opinion, the Big Sky can eat their hat!

After being romanced by them, having sweet nothings whispered in our ear, the B.S. Confrence stood us up. So screw em!

Personally, I like the idea of playing in the Mid-Con, even if I'm not completely familiar with some of the teams. I really think that by adding ourselves, NDSU, and IPFW, we could be on the ground floor of some very exciting changes that could stabilize and solidify the MCC in years to come.

Besides, it gives us more of a reason to want to throttle those Big Sky snobs when we play em in football!

Thank you, jackrabit1! The BS Conference is well.....BS. : :

I think our greatest concern with the BS Conference in the future (probably 3-5 years) is if they try to raid NDSU from the Mid-Con and have them paired up with UND (who will still be looking for a conference in all likelihood). We'll just have to remind Bison fans that half of their conference basketball games won't make the paper due to the time zone difference! Plus, how many basketball recruits (for both SDSU and NDSU) are west of the 100th meridian???

I'm not very optimistic that we'll get many opportunities to throttle BS Conference teams in football either as they have preferred to play teams further west (SUU, Davis, and Cal-Poly) for OOC matchups. In addition, none of them have yet traveled to Brookings and Montana ia a decent bet to buy out their trip here in 2007.

We will have nothing to fear until such time as the BS conference loses it west coast teams. It is clear that SDSU/NDSU or NDSU/UND partnership would make no difference to the Big Sky schools (regardless of what UND fans think and say), the Big Sky said as much. What they did say would make a difference is if their current make up changed. If that happened all bets could be off, but my guess is we and NDSU will be firmly entrenched in our all sports and football homes and will have no interest in playing in their league. As it looks right now the Big Sky is a non-factor except as a sourse for OOC games.

          Go State!

Re: Big Sky Conference - Any news?

The most likely school to leave the Big Sky is Montana, next most likely is probably Sac State, both by moving up to I-A. I don't think either is really very likely. Montana's in a real good spot being a big fish in I-AA, and still basking in the glow of their first round NCAA basketball win. Sac State on the other hand may be looking down the road at schools like Fresno State and saying "why not us?"

If Montana moves up, Montana State will start feeling the pressure to move up as well (they're Montana's Land-Grant like SDSU and NDSU and unlike Idaho State--U. of Idaho is that state's Land Grant.)

I don't think the California GWFC schools are likely to leave the Big West for the Big Sky--if anything, I'd say they're more likely to move up to I-A than to consider a Big Sky membership for the foreseeable future.

Not knowing what the future holds, but knowing the Big Sky's obsession with "major markets" my money is on them adding Utah Valley State for basketball, and then UVSC instituting a football program to "solidify the conference in the rapidly growing Salt Lake City market" (me putting words in the Big Sky's mouth). I don't see the Big Sky going after any Dakota/Minnesota schools, ever.

It's also possible (but unlikely) that the entire Big Sky may make a run at I-A. I don't see how they'll be very successful as a conference at that level, seeing how both the Mountain West and the WAC are barely into the BCS mix. It makes no sense to be a I-A conference if you're not in the BCS, and I don't see how the Big Sky gets into the BCS without spending years in I-A purgatory.

So sayeth filbert. Your mileage may vary. Balls and bats may enter the stands. Not valid in Vermont. Patent Pending.

Interesting points by Filbert that have piqued my curiosity. What ever happened to the 1-A stadium/attendance requirements that made news a while back? Were they approved? Would those BSC schools have problems with those requirements? Figured someone on the board would have the info quicker than i could find it on my own.

Re: Big Sky Conference - Any news?

I thought that the stadium attendance Minimum was 15,000. With that in mind Montana has no problem, Montana State would struggle and I have no idea about the other B.S. schools. But I don't think that has been enforced yet but has been used as a threat and I am sure one day when the BCS schools want to thin the herd that it will be used to send some smaller schools back to I-AA
