So 1 more year as an independent and then, watch out Mid-Con. Just kidding. It is an important step towards acceptance as a full-fledged DI university. Now it gives athletes a chance to compete for a conference title and makes scheduling a little easier. Looking forward to establishing some rivalries with fellow Mid-Con teams. The "Dakota Trip" could be known as one of the tougher ones to make for Mid-Con favorites.

Being in the Mid-Con will make scheduling a whole lot easier for all sports. In basketball we currently are in the UBC with 5 other teams. With IPFW and NDSU leaving the UBC next year, we would have been down to 3 other teams, unless more are added.

But being in the Mid-Con, we are in with 9 other teams. Looking at some of the schedules for this year in the Mid-Con, it looks like they schedule games on Saturday and Monday. For example if the men's team is on the road playing UMKC on Saturday and ORU on Monday, the girls will play UMKC on Saturday and ORU on Monday in Brookings. So Brookings will have two home games, either the boys or girls every week during conference play. This will really help draw fans knowing that every Saturday and Monday there is going to be a game in Brookings.

Having 18 conference games in basketball, really does help making out a schedule. We only need to find 6 to 8 OOC games a year to fill out our schedule. The OOC games can be scheduled prior to New Year, when everyone else is looking to fill their OOC games. This is just one of many benefits that being in a conference can provide.
