Despite perfect start, NMSU still left out of Top 25 coaches poll

    By Geoff Grammer/Sun-News Sports Editor

Maybe his team's dominating, three-game sweep of the New Mexico Lobos on Monday night on the road helped ease the sting a bit for New Mexico State volleyball coach Mike Jordan.

About two hours before first serve in Albuquerque, the coach of the Aggies was told about this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll, a poll NMSU was left off despite a perfect 10-0 start (extended Monday night to 11-0 after the poll's release), including wins over well-regarded San Diego, Sacramento State and Texas Tech.

"I really thought getting into the Top 25 was a legitimate chance this week, especially with the San Diego win (Sept. 8 in the Hilton Las Cruces Classic)," Jordan said. "But right now, teams 10 through 40 could probably beat each other on any given night."

The poll, released Monday afternoon, shows the undefeated Aggies receiving 81 points, 17 points away from the Top 25. Arizona (7-2) and Kansas State (8-2) are tied, sharing the 24th/25th spots in the poll. NMSU is slotted in the 28th spot in the poll, but, contrary to their introduction at Saturday night's football game as the "nationally ranked Aggies," a team is only considered ranked if they are in the Top 25, hence the name of such polls being called "Top 25." All other teams are considered just that, others. . . . (read more)

The ladies Jacks are fun to watch. The Pac-10 teams, which SDSU is 2-0 against, have a combined 81-14 record. Cal, UCLA, USC, & Oregon are unbeaten. Stanford is 6-1, defending National champ Washington is 8-1, and Washington State, the Jacks victim is 11-1. Oregon State, the other Jacks victim is 3-6 and has the only losing record in the Pac-10.

        Bluehatman,

Spread the word around. Let's get the stands filled up. A very vocal student crowd this week-end for the volleyball matches will only bring good things. Be loud throughout and who knows what might happen. Their first opponent (NMSU) is ranked 27/28 in the country. Time for a huge upset.

Go Big! Go Blue! Go Jacks!

I have already spread the word on facebook earlier this week. The bluehatman will have a new addition this week. After class Friday I shall be heading over to Frost to watch girls playing good volleyball.

Sorry to say they lost 3-0. I don't know if NM is that good or if we just couldn't get things going. Those that were at the match will have to fill in the details.

                Re: Volleyball - Jackrabbit Invitational

New Mexico State is a really good team. Two of their girls 9 and 31 were constantly at the net killing the ball and the rabbits had no defense to that. We tried to come back in the 3rd game but didn't quite make it. And I think the injury bug has sort of hit us. Good size crowd for a Friday night with the BHS homecoming game and women's soccer game in town. Communication wasn't really there. 10 am tomorrow is the first match with the rabbits playing at 1. If you get a chance to be in town tomorrow catch the girls play they have a lot of good talent.

I concur. NMSU is a good team. They are beatable though. They played much better against us than they did this afternoon against Lamar. The Jacks did not play up to their potential. Hopefully tomorrow we will see the Jacks pick-up a couple of W's. Keep the crowds coming Bluehat. It is starting to look good.

Ladies rebound with a 3-1 win over UMKC. That is now 2-0 against Mid-Con teams. Come out and watch them beat Lamar University at 7:00 p.m.

Jacks finish their invitational with a 3-0 win over Lamar University. They move to 9-4 on the season. Kristina Martin reaches the 1000 kill mark for her career. Start of the match was delayed because of a 25 minute stoppage when the tornado sirens went off in Brookings during game 1 between NMSU and NDSU.

                        Re: Volleyball - Jackrabbit Invitational

In a first for Frost Arena, there was a stoppage for a tornado during an event. There were some cool funnel clouds that went over campus and almost produced tornadoes. Anyways back to the games, I watched all four games today. NMSU proved to me they deserve a top 25 spot. State came back and got 2 wins, hopefully we can pull out a win Tuesday night against Creighton.
