  • Hobo Day

Brookings Register article has some of the details:
While Hobo Week culminates with the Saturday afternoon football game, activities begin on Monday, Oct. 23.
The Jackrabbit Rally begins at the Intramural Building at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, with a hobo meal. At 7 p.m., the attention shifts to a student dress-up contest, the One Month Club check-ins and skits. Among the entries for the beard-growing contest is the entire SDSU wrestling team.

"I’m super excited about that," French said. In addition to judging bearded wrestlers, there are contests for the best pigtails and hairiest legs.

French, a broadcast journalism major with a specialization in advertising, has been using her marketing skills to help promote One Month Club participation. She began visits to residential hall councils and Greek councils earlier in the year, and as a result of that effort, she says, participation in Hobo Week activities should be higher than in the past.

"A lot of people are showing enthusiasm," French said.

Another highlight of Hobo Week is the Homelycoming Pageant, which is Wednesday, Oct. 25. This is the third year for the event in which guys dress up in drag.

"It packs the PAC (Performing Arts Center) and always is a lot of fun," French said.
And now, questions for the board:
What's your most memorable Hobo Day?
What's your most infamous Hobo Day Moment (if not the answer to #1)? (Does not have to, but probably does, involve alcohol).

For me, both involve watching the Hobo Day parade and drinking "home-made Kahlua" (i.e. really thick sweet coffee with probably a bit too much Everclear in it). This made going to the game basically impossible. So, after I somehow got home that afternoon (I walked, I'm pretty sure), I lay on my bed very drunk and very, very, very wide awake, listening to the State-Augie game on the radio. I think we won, but am not sure.

Drink in moderation, kids, from one who knows . . . :-[

    Ahh, Hobo Days memories....

    Most infamous:

Must have been my 4th year of college.  Went downtown pretty much every night that week.  We lived a stone's throw from the movie theatre so driving wasn't an issue.  I had a little too much to drink Friday night.  Mac's Retro Rocket Diner  ;D served all you can eat breakfast buffet.  Against my better judgement, I dove right in to all the scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and biscuts and gravey.  After I had my fill of beer, morgan, and tequilia, I had my fill of breakfast.  Well, on the walk home, the liquid tenants of my belly started arguing with the breakfast tenants :-[.  I was about a block from my house and thought I would make it home.  Well, Jose, The Captain, and Mr. Busch Light decided to kick everyone out :'(.  I left a mess of eggs, pancakes, and gravey all over the sidewalk.  The next morning, while heading down to Ray's Corner at 7 a.m. my buddies and I had to walk through that pile of crap that came out of my belly and you could actually see some very big chunks of scrambled eggs lying there on the sidewalk.  The real b!tch of this whole situation is that I spent $40 on drinks and $6 on the buffet and all of it was splattered all over the sidewalk...

Thank God those days are over....

      Re: Hobo Day

My Junior year my roomates and I lived in a house just on the other side of the railroad tracks on main street.  We decided it would be a good idea to have a get together Friday night before heading to the bar.  All went well, and eventually everyone went to the bar.  Lots of alcohol and several slices of George's later we all returned to the house to finish where we started.  I crashed at my girlfriends house.  The only problem was my parents (from R.C.) were in S.F. for the weekend and had never been to Hobo Days.  They gave me a call and I met them for brunch, then went to the house to hook up a computer they had brought for me.  I had never seen either of my parents drink a drop, but when we walked into the house, everbody that had been there the night before was still there...all passed out.  We're talking 10/11 a.m.  I had no idea how they would react. They both got a kick out of it and my father eventually used several empty Busch Light cases to build a stand for the printer.   I think it was at that point that I realized they weren't as clueless as I had thought they were.

      Man, I miss George's!!!!

I picked up a half dozen tickets on Monday.  We had to buy in the second section from the north end of the stadium.  Tickets are going well and those who don't have them better hurry.  The closest motel rooms I could find were in Madison.

            Re: Hobo Day

            I'll be there!

As for my most infamous Hobo Day memory:
I won't go into great detail, but it involved kegs & eggs at the Safari, some Bloody Mary's at Ray's and Skinner's, a vulcan mind probe or two for a friend's birthday, and drinking Bailey's and coffee while watching the parade.  All of which eventually led to me wearing a motorcycle helmet that one of my roommates "found" earlier in the week and a fun game of "will it break" on the roof of our main street apartment.

For future reference, Boone's wine bottles are alot tougher to break than Bud Light beer bottles

Ok, maybe there was some detail there, but that was just a snippet of the morning of my favorite Hobo Day!

              Re: Hobo Day

Here are two Hobo Day Classics.

The first one was in 1985 (?).  We played USD for Hobo Day.  I believe they were ranked number 1 in the nation.  They fumbled on either the first or second play and the Jackrabbit Stampede was on.  SDSU ended up winning the game.  We ventured uptown to the Lucky Lady and there was a line wrapped around the front of the bar through the ally to the west.  It was a very long line.  We walked by the front door and the bouncer (who if you recall were the very large weight lifters) told us to stand by the door.  Due to fire safety issues they were only letting so many people in as people left.  We stood there and were kind of nervous why the bouncer told us to stand by the door.  The bouncer told us to shut up and just stand there.  A few people left the bar and the bouncer turned to us and said "you guys can go in".  The entire line exploded and the bouncer looked at them and said "if you were here every single night, I would let you in too."  We looked at the bouncer and said we are not here every night.  He said, "Every single time I am working you guys are in the corner playing pinochle."  He was right and in the end we all ended up graduating and got a great education from SDSU in more ways than one.  It is a shame that place is now a NAPA store.  The stories those walls could tell.

This next story I am not really proud of but it is a classic.  A couple of years later, I got married, had the kid thing, etc... We were sitting around before the game.  One of my friends was wondering how we were going to get the liquor into the game.  I did not plan on going to the game as I could not find a babysitter during the game.  A SDSU graduate who was hanging around with us before the game with his wife (who was a sister to one of my friends) looked at me and said "we have the perfect way staring us in the face."  He explains how we could take my son to the game with his diaper bag and hide the booze in the diaper bag.  His wife quickly volunteered to babysit my son during the game and convinced me he would be in great hands.  In the end, we got the booze in the game and my son got to rest on some wonderful breasts of a beautiful SDSU alumni.  The kicker to the story was just a couple years ago, one of those friends became an assistant coach for a football team that my son was playing against in the playoffs.  Evidently, the assistant coach had told the other coaches on his team about the above story.  After the game, by the way my son's team won, the assistant coach calls his fellow coaches over to introduce my son as the diaper bag kid to the other coaches.  They all busted out laughing and so I had to explain the story to my son who was a junior at the time.  As I was leaving the field our coaches were wondering what was so funny so I explained the story to them.  It was probably not the smartest decision at the time and certain social service people would definitely frown upon the decision, but nonetheless it is a classic.  I did go right home after the game to a scowling wife.  Needless to say I was not allowed to go out and play that night.

                Re: Hobo Day

the Georges Pizza thing reminded me of my most memorable hobo day. i actually did not attend SDSU but became a jack fan when my sister, who was 4 yrs older than me, went to SDSU and i was able to go to basketball and football games. in 1975(yep, im old) i went to my first hobo day with a friend and we were going to be staying at my sisters. i was 18 at the time but of course was legal to drink. the game was against USD and if i remember right, the USD cheerleaders were chanting something like, beat state, eight straight. well, the jacks kicked a field goal with less than a minute to go to win it. i believe at the time, the attendance was the most to see a football game in south dakota, im think over 15000. afterwards we were at the bars, i dont remember which ones, just a lot of them. we went to georges and ate pizza and headed back to my sisters to pass out. which i did and woke up sometime during the night/morning with puke all over her couch. she ended up having to throw it out, im sure it was worth at least 10 bucks but i did feel bad. and yes bluehatman, i'll be up there next weekend. what time does the parade start?

                    Re: Hobo Day

I am working on a story for the collegian about past great hobo day games. I am wondering if you, the knowledgable Jackrabbit fans, can give me information about great games. I am sure you all have favorite memories, but I am looking for information about outstanding football games, such as the '96 Hobo Day game versus USD. Sadly, I am but a 23 year old from the Twin Cities, so I don't have the rich Hobo Day history that many of you have. Please send me a message with any information you have by Monday, Oct. 23. Thank you very much and enjoy the Hobo Day festivities if you come to the game.

                      Re: Hobo Day

You know what's really sad. I played in four Hobo Day games and was on the sideline or in the press box for two others as a student assistant coach, and running my ass off for three others as ticket manager, and I can't remember one thing that happened on the field in any of those nine games. Too many blows to the head I guess My memory may be jogged a little if I saw opponents and scores, but off the top of my head I got nothing.

                        Re: Hobo Day

I'll never forget my first Hobo Day as a student. I went out on Friday to as many house parties as I could find. Spent Saturday with the worst hangover of my life and to make matters worse it was pretty cold, and since my parents lived 8 hours away I didn't have any really warm clothes at school yet. So I stood on the sidelines freezing/hungover while the Jacks got pounded by NDSU 49-7. I didn't even go out on Saturday night. Just went back to my room and slept. That was the last time I overdid it on a Friday night of Hobo Day.

My first Hobo Day experience was as a HS senior at the infamous largest crowd ever SDSU v USD game. I came and spent the weekend with a friend. It's what sealed the deal for me coming to SDSU
