Any one invision SDSU having Gymnastics as a sport in the future? Has it ever been a sport here? I see that Nebraska has both a womens and mens team. Is this sport just for the big time schools or do other mid major schools have gymnastics. Adding Gymansitcs for women seems less expensive to run than equestrian and is more fan friendly in my mind.

Re: Gymnastics?
The school has already committed millions to an equestrian facility. It has been explained to me on this site, that equestrian parent/families are a desireable group of boosters. Most equestrian participants come from well-to-do families. Plus it keeps with our land grant/moo U mentality. I think we have to put our trust in Peggy Miller and Fred Oien's insight.
Although it's unlikely I'll ever attend an equestrian event, I sure the heck gaurantee I would never go to a gymnastics competition.LET'S TAKE A TRIP TO BIRDLAND! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68-6O2mJhMw

...on gymnastics returning: yes, we had men's and women's gymnastics into the mid 70s...perhaps as long as about 1980. Was Pete Torino the coach?

Re: Hockey?
The basics of the argument are it came down to hockey and equestrian for what new woman's sport to add. They decided equestrian was more feasible and cheaper to afford. Thus, hockey will most likely remain a club sport unless some backer wants to spend a couple mill. for a hockey team, travel arena, etc. I am sure there was a little debate about what sport to add, hopefully in the long run it works out for equestrian. Image the new equestrian facility full of people with cowbells. : ;D That could be fun.

Re: Gymnastics?
I would add that gynastics is a declining sport on the high school level also. Primary reasons: Expsensive equipment, few qualified coaches and HUGE LIABILITY. The SDHSAA has recognized the decline and the day when it is no longer a sanctioned sport is coming.
Since the committment was made to maintain the current sports when State went D-1, we need to insure the current sports( including equestrian) are upgraded before ever looking at new sports.

Re: Gymnastics?
We have to add more women's sports if we want to get all the men's sports up to full NCAA-allowed scholarship limits.
Equestrian was added because it has the potential to be a revenue generator for the department. Women's Hockey wasn't added because it doesn't have that potential.
My view is that we need to get the scholarships funded that we have planned, and address the facilities issues (Student-Athlete center/fieldhouse, Coughlin-Alumni upgrade, baseball stadium, softball stadium, etc.) before even thinking about adding another sport.
The Coughlin-Alumni issue will become critical in the next 5-10 years (or sooner, if chunks start falling)."I think we'll be OK"

Re: Gymnastics?
Here's the D-I max scholarships and what SDSU plans to offer in FY 2010:
Men--129.10 max, 98 offered
Baseball--11.7 max, 7.0 offered
Basketball--13, 13
Cross country/track--12.6, 5.5
Football--63, 63
Golf--4.5, 0.25
Swimming & Diving--9.9, 1.25
Tennis--4.5, 0.5
Wrestling--9.9, 7.5
Women--112.00 max, 98.0 offered
Basketball--15 max, 15 offered
Cross country/track--18, 15.5
Equestrian--15, 15
Golf--6, 5
Soccer--12, 11
Softball--12, 12
Swimming & Diving--14, 10.5
Tennis--8, 2
Volleyball--12, 12
So the men's program will offer 98 of a possible 129.1 scholarships (or 31.1 possible scholarships not offered).
The women's programs will offer 98 of a possible 112 scholarships (or 14 possible scholarships not offered).
Or, looking at it another way, we could offer 14 more scholarships for men and women, 112 scholarships for both, and still "under-fund" men's scholarships by 16.1 athletes.
I'd rather work on fully funding the sports we have than start thinking about adding new sports. Wouldn't you?"I think we'll be OK"

Re: Gymnastics?
But... the speculation continues with what we would potentially have to offer to off set the men's 17 extra scholarships. My vote would be for Competitive cheer or dance teams like one sees on ESPN from time to time. It could help fire up the crowd at games, which seems to be a problem lately. However, I am not sure that's even a sanctioned sport with the NCAA as it is in SD.
