    Re: SDSU on TV

I guess I should have clarified... is there any debate between watching a crappy, third-rate soap and watching South Dakota's ORIGINAL Division One University on TV?

      Re: SDSU on TV

I think of the two big sports news stories of the day (the other being the USD announcement), the possible KELO TV contract is much, much, much bigger news for SDSU and the Jackrabbit Nation.

        Re: SDSU on TV

I can see Abbott and Nielsen trying to call KELO in a futile attempt to air USD games instead of SDSU games.

I agree with you, filbert, that the potential KELO contract will be more important to SDSU athletics than USD's dog-and-coyote show because we are about ready to lock up the most-prominent media outlet in the state. It seems like that this story may have been the final tipping point for USD in its D-1 decision-making process; Abbott had previosuly stated that he was going to make his decision in December. Today is November 29.

Ya know, I was wondering if our impending contract with KELO didn't push things up a bit with USD's decision... kinda sad if "Moo U" has a lucrative TV contract with the state's most prolific TV station while "South Dakota's Team" is left out in the cold.

They want to have it for the Regents meeting in December. Since the Board of Regents packet comes out soon, they wanted to have a press conference before then. Keeping with regental process today was the first day they could have announced. In theory, they would have announced any day between today and Sunday.

              Re: SDSU on TV

Some people are going to choose to stay at home at watch the games on TV. That's a negative, but I think overall, it's a small negative. The positive is that people who, in the past didn't go to SDSU games are going to watch them on TV, and some of those will start going to some games. I think it will wind up being a net positive. Games on TV are great advertising, it turns the entire viewing area into potential butts in seats.

Is there any chance of a blackout for the Brookings area for the games? I know a lot of the Big 10 schools black out the local area, so you actually have to go to the game to see it.

                  Re: SDSU on TV

If you black out Brookings from the over-the-air signal, you black out Sioux Falls as well.

The way to blackout the games in Brookings is to show them on UTV, being "MediaCon" doesn't carry UTV, and I don't know if you can get it over the air in Brookings. You would need a digital tuner to pick it up anyway, because it's not broadcast in analog.  If they wanted to go that way they could carry the away games on KELO and home games on UTV.  I would rather the games be on KELO.

I would prefer KELO since we get them in the Black Hills via the KCLO station in Rapid City. I think the next best choice would be either via internet broadcast or pay per view on cable TV. Does anybody know if pay per view over multiple cable systems throughout South Dakota would ever be an option?

UTV comes in great in Brookings, you just need an over the air HD antenna with a digital tuner of course.

I was wondering (guessing; speculating; have no facts) if the TV deal has been a work-in-progress and was announced just ahead of the USD D-1 announcement to steal a little thunder.  I don't think USD moved up its announcement in reaction.

does anyone remember what the deadline was that the NCC imposed for their exit fee for schools leaving the conference?

Was it Dec. 1, or Dec. 15? That certainly entered into Abbott's timing of the announcement.

I would think/speculate/believe that if our athletic department was looking to steal some thunder with the announcement they would have waited until after the USD announcement.

Like it was stated earlier though. The leadership in our athletic department will not let any info out until it is time. So who knows.
