It looks like we're talking primarily about away games here, meaning KELO would not have to foot the bill for production, which is very expensive. I'm guessing that in most cases, they'd just have to arrange to pick up the feeds from somebody else, sell the ads, and clear the airtime.

One of the things that impresses me about our Athletic Department leadership, is that they have such high standards for the department's performance. Nothing is done halfway. If this doesn't make fiscal sense, they won't do it. If it does, they'll do it right. This is really a potentially great tool for SDSU. You boost interest in the program by televising away games, possibly make some money, and get more people interested in attending home games.[/quote]


That would make a ton of sense to me! Televising 20 home basketball games would almost certainly dip into attendance at the games and hurt season tickets but it would be awesome to have the road games on TV! We could always turn the volume down on the tele and listen to Steve Imming or Scotty Kwas call the games on the radio if they plan to use a feed!

If this isn't going to cost SDSU anything and we could possibly profit from it, that would be a great deal! My trust is with the leadership to sift through everything and make a great decision!

If this comes true, I guess I'll finally have to invest in that Slingbox I've been looking at . . . unless the deal includes Internet streaming.

I've thought about getting one and installing it in some kindly friend's residence up in SD since they came out a year ago or so, just to be able to receive Jackrabbit telecasts, when available. I might have to get serious about it, if they don't come through with a good webcasting deal.

Not sure if I'm keen on the the away games not having our announcers, but that is small beans compared to the big picture. This news is very exiting!!

Also, keep in mind how many high profile teams get played away from home, especially basketball, where it is tough to get them to Frost.

I'm with Filbert on this. WEBCAST, LIVESTREAMING! Kelo land has live streamed all of their USD games in the past couple of years (and even the last USD/SDSU football game), so I'm guessing the same will happen with the (hopefully) future SDSU games. I am very excited about this news item.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Is there anything we can do to help make this happen? I can't think of anything I wouldn't do. It won't prevent me from attending games and should give a lot more people a chance to become Jack's fans.

I think the biggest opportunity with this deal is getting the "casual" fan in Sioux Falls interested in SDSU. There are a ton of people living in Sioux Falls who have moved here from other parts of the country and don't have a local team (college or professional) to cheer for. Giving them a local DI team on TV to regularly follow and become connected to would be a big draw in getting more people interested in the Jacks.

A few things:

1) This is for Internet streaming and building a statewide brand.  You can find cheaper ways to target Sioux Falls.
2) It's about who sells the advertising - State or KELO.  You'll know depending upon how many UTV games there'll be.
3) You still have to go to Hobo Day and NDSU games, unless its on CSTV.  
4) How does a Thursday night football game sound?  How about Sunday night to compete with the NFL?
5) When will the Jackrabbit Report air?  You have to see that's in the future sometime.

We got one Thursday night game next year. Plans are being talked about the future Thursday night game possibilities. Most likely either before or after a bye week.

What game is that? I smell an extended weekend trip back home for the Milwaukee family.

The season opener against Western Illlinois is on Thursday, August 30th.

This is great news, and I'm glad it's KELO, because as mentioned, they cover a wider area.

I had been contemplating starting a thread for either KSFY or KDLT to do this, and step it up a notch.

If they could have snagged the "SDSU Broadcast Rights" Their roles as "second citizens" in the state may have changed.

I agree that if this came out of the athletic department, there is a good chance this will happen.

If SDSU buys up all the advertising spots, this might ensure more games on KELO, because the TV station would not have to go out and sell those spots.  KELO might give them more games on KELO and not UTV because of a bulk purchase agreement.  

If SDSU does not buy up all the spots, KELO could sell top dollar ad spots for the games broadcast on UTV, and still have regular programming (and regular ad revenue) on KELO, especially during prime time weeknight.  The TV station would want to maximize its sales for both stations.  They'll be able to increase viewership of UTV without having to give up ad revenue from KELO.

As for Hobo Day and NDSU games, I'd be surprised if any home game against NDSU or the Hobo Day game would be on TV.  If you want to watch it, you have to attend the game.  SDSU would lose ticket gate receipts, program sales and concession buys if people could stay home, not mess with 12,000 people and watch it on TV.  You still want people in the seats.  Some folks say you can lose up to 10% of your attendance if its on TV for a market like ours.  I'd rather lose 10% of the 5,500 people that come to Western Illinois than 10% of the 15,000+ that attend Hobo Day.

It is if you have the dish packages. We don't get UTV, at least I don't in mid-SD.
