Here's a way to do this. Organize an area put up a banner and tell the people in your group to meet there. Organize your group if you want it to be successful. Don't half ass it.

Frankly I don't think you can create hype for a student fan section over night. It will first take sucsess from both the mens and womens teams to provide large numbers for the students section. Its tough for a student section to be super enthusiastic when the teams struggle. Atleast our womens team is dominating, and as soon as the mens team gets back on track and if its possible to play conference double headers like we use to in the NCC. Those are the things that will get students into the games and excited to be a part of the fanaddicts or frost bites. Over time it will evolve into what ever it wants to be. It prolly wont start in a year or 2 with big support untill the teams start winning and bringing in confrence championships.

I could really care less about the fanadicts or the frostbit...i just want them to be successful which in turn will bring more people to the games...it's not going to happen until we're successful....

A few thoughts here:

1. We are way off topic and this should become another thread in another place!

2. Winning will create more interest and involvement. Look at the NDSU games last year! The crowd was back and they were loud and there wasn't any need for a fan group to get them going! Conference schedules and improvement will bring the crowds back. You wait and see, if we host a WNIT game, the hizzle will be full and rockin'!

3. I appreciate what bluehatman and his gang has done! I wish they were getting bigger crowds but they need to be commended for getting this thing started. THERE IS NO NEED FOR TWO FAN GROUPS! Get the groups together and discuss what you want to do and get it done! Everyone is rooting for the same team aren't they? This thing doesn't need to go the way the Republicans and Democrats have been going. ONE TEAM, ONE STUDENT BODY, GET 'ER DONE!

4. All of the athletes deserve our support! They are all working as hard as they can and the least we could do is give them support! The number of fans coming to the games is very disappointing to me! Worse than that, I sit in the blue seats and it drives me nuts when I stand up to cheer a great play and I'm told to sit down! I'm not yelling at the refs, saying anything off-color, or anything else but cheering on our team. I so want to just tell them to get off their backside and cheer or stay home but that doesn't really encourage them to keep coming. When something good happens on the court, we should all cheer them on! Sometimes it is so quite in Frost Arena that it is emberassing.

There, I said, I'm done and can get on with the day!

I hate to break this to all of you, but changing the name of Fanaddicts is not going to get more people to any games. And I am afraid even if the men were on winning kick, we couldn't get attendance over 3,000. Why? Because students at this campus have a lack of interest in anything.

Not only is game attendance dwindling to patheticness, but clubs and student organizations are dying because not body wants to participate. BlueHatMan mentioned a couple of posts ago that we can't get anyone to run for SA president, and he is absolute right. Only one person is running for the job, a position that is extremely important to students because that person helps decided where student fees go.

But look at groups like UPC. That used be a thriving organization, but it too is now struggling to find members.

Student leaders are working so hard because they don't have people in their organizations to help that they are failing classes and getting so burned out. Then others see that and are discouraged even more from participating in a campus organization.

Part of the problem could come from the fact that SDSU is unfortunately a "suit case college." Many students go home every weekend. If you think about it, a majority of SDSU students are from rural areas and usually go home on weekends to help with the family farm. But that isn't all 11,000 students.

What I have noticed is that a majority of students really don't care about anything that goes on on campus. They are here to get a degree. They don't care about SDSU's big rival game and they don't care about the new president and they don't care about the logo redesign.

I am all for changing students’ mentality because I think SDSU is a wonderful place and I wish people cared about it as much as I do, but it just isn't the truth. There is a core group of 1,000 - 2,000 students who love SDSU and will support it in anyway, but other than that, most don't care.

Look at students at U of M or UNL. They take hard classes and have jobs, but they also support their teams and are involved on campus. SDSU can be like that too, but I just don't know how we get there.

I do commend our Athletic Department and student leaders who are trying very hard to bring more life to this campus, but they need help. And a name change of fan group isn't going to do it.

As a first time poster, great job!  I can't agree more with you and we have to figure out a way to keep students here on the weekends.  Raising the level of interest in our general student body will hopefully snowball into a strong following.  I wish I had the answers to make this happen!

This actually is not true and hasn't been for several years. I heard the head of admissions (can't remember the name) speak last year about this issue. I recall him saying a large majority of SDSU students have never resided on a farm.

During the fall, attendance at football games from students is pretty good, for the most part atleast. So where do all those fans go during basketball season? A lot of it has to do with winning. When we were good in the NCC and winning confrence titles, attendance was good. Maybe not as good as other major schools, but for schools we played, we were high in D-2. When we start competing in the mid con, and if we can get double headers again, I think that could really help get students to the game, hype it up a little. There isnt much of an incentive to go watch the men Play another struggling indepentant and lose.
I do agree that the campus has been a suit case campus for to long. I think a lot of it and some people may agree with me, and others might not, is because of UPD and Brookings police. Students in general want to have fun and party. It's tought to want to stay in town where police are always looking for the next big party. Just look at the number of party houses brookings use to have. When i was a freshman in 2000, there were dozens going on every nite. The cops know where those houses are over the years and would bust them and people would get serious fines. It wasnt worth it for students to have party houses any more. Not saying this is the only reason but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection to it all.

This is really starting to drag on!

I've been hearing this suitcase college stuff for 20+ years and it just isn't true!  Oh, sure, we all know kids that go back home for this, that, or the other reason on every weekend.  What will change the attendance is when the students are given a reason to be at the games (outside of school pride and everything else in my post above.  Winning, a conference to play in, and the opportunity to play in the big time post-season will help provide a lot of help!

The whole enchilada comes down to winning!  When a team is winning, the crowds will show up and cheer them on!  The game needs to be an event and where the students and us normal fans want to be.  WIN AND THEY WILL COME BACK!!!

Why do I say that and how can I show it?  

Here it goes:

1. SDSU was consitently the top or near the top in D-2 attendance nationally in both men's and women's basketball for the last 15-20 years.  The NCC games had meaning and were all scheduled on the weekends so everyone could come.  The Mid-Con is next year and the schedule will be weekends again!  Hallelujia!

2. Look at the NDSU games last year.  We filled the joint up!

3. Look at football attendance this year.  The best in SDSU history and it isn't even close to the next closest year.  They won so we went!

4. The women's team is having an outstanding year and they are one of five D-1 women's teams that have outdrawn their men's teams. That says it all to me!

5. Future prognosticator here, if the women get into the WNIT and we host a game, Frost Arena will be full and it will quite possibly be the most electric atmoshphere in the history of all SDSU basketball!  Trust me, I'll remind everyone of this post if I'm right!

When this team turns everything around the fans will come back because Frost Arena will become the place to be!  I can't wait and I still believe it will be in the very near future for men's basketball! Coach Nagy and Coach Larson will right the ship and bring the excitement back!

Winning cures everything!

As much as I don't care to see it. Playing USD in the future along with getting competitive in the mid con, could really up the fan support and students interest. As much as i hate usd, which is a lot, its not a sercret that rivalry games big out every body to watch them. It would be nice to see frost filled up to 8000 people like it has been in the past.
