It seems most SDSU fans on this board haven't made much out of winning the cup and I think the same will hold true if the cup is award to the branch campus: the cup ignores many of our teams because the other party doesn't sponsor those same sports.

If any gloating goes on, its pretty easy to link posts in which fans of a school that hasn't yet won the cup were critical of the cup since its inception. My view, stated before on this topic in other threads: the cup has no significance to me and I wish it would go away.

Fact is USD is dominating SDSU in VB and softball, track and now just won a golf championship. Women's basketball is at the top of the conference.

USD earned the cup this year. Congrats to them.

Its good promotion for the corn growers association, and most of the leaders in that group are SDSU alums, I would tend to believe, so I don't see it going away any time soon. I did not realize the race was this close this year. How do they score track? USD-SDSU dual meet?

Whichever finishes higher at the SL Track & Field Championships. USD has it all but locked up. I've been told the women's Track & Field team has a slim chance but not likely.

Yup, that sounds like we have struck a good balance.. C'mon

The reason that USD is able to beat our track program year in and year out is funding. We have equestrian, wrestling, and baseball. USD doesn't have these sports and has more money to give to the track program. They offer full ride scholarships to some of their athletes where our best male on the track team, Jeremiah Ary, gets about a half scholarship. USD has a Jamaican that they recruited that is a top hurdler in the nation. It is a lot easier for them to get that kind of talent when they have full ride scholarships to offer. IMO the only way USD was to agree to the trophy was for there to be a large amount of points for track and cross country. It heavily favors them when our successful programs in baseball and wrestling aren't even a contributing factor. I believe that it really says something about our university that we were able to win the trophy the last couple years with it giving an edge to USD.

The same thing can be argued about SDSU winning the Commissioner Cup the past couple of years. SDSU sponsors the most(?) sports in the Summit League. So they get an advantage in that. I'd say get rid out both the Commissioner's Cup and the South Dakota Corn Showdown. Both have little meaning and and are flawed. They could keep the South Dakota Corn Showdown and use it as a traveling trophy for football, kind of like the Dakota Marker with NDSU.

                      Re: South Dakota Corn Showdown

I posted this in JackJD's "Keep it or dump it" thread a while back. I see no reason to change my opinion now.

As far as I can tell, the biggest and most significant and visible effect of the Corn Showdown is that it fills up advertising slots on the SDSU and USD radio network broadcasts.

Better than more repetitions of Jackrabbit Central/SDSU Bookstore ads, anyway.

                      (I didn't vote because I didn't see a "Meh" option . . .)

butt..butt the Corn Growers got to be somewhere doing something with the money they collect. I like the idea of making that a football trophy.

My point wasn't as much about how the trophy is awarded. I understand why USD dominates in track. My concern is much more about VB and softball. USD owns us right now and I don't like it one bit.

I know its easy to lump T & F, indoor and outdoor, and cross country, all in one group but fact is, there are notable differences. The SDSU men have been dominant in Cross Country over the years in the old NCC days (winning more than half the conference titles) and has established itself as a perennial favorite in the Summit League. The women CC teams were also dominant in the NCC days and are almost always in the fight in the Summit League. USD has had much stronger T & F programs since Dave Gottsleben (SDSU -75) took the helm for the Coyotes. USD's men are almost always in the mix for the conference title with NDSU (coached by Don Larson, also SDSU '75). In the near term, watch for SDSU's teams to rapidly improve because we finally have a top indoor training facility, the SJAC.

The Corn Showdown system awards the following points:

1 pt Men's Cross County -- for this year (Fall, 2014), SDSU won and picked up a point
1 pt Women's Cross County -- this year, USD won and picked up a point.
                            1 pt Men's Indoor T&F -- USD picked up a point
                            1 pt Women's Indoor T&F -- USD picked up a point
                            1 pt M Outdoor T&F
                            1 pt W Outdoor T&F

Of course, M & W outdoor track have yet to be determined this year. There's a point in play for each team (M & W). The USD men's team will fight for the conference title with NDSU and I think USD should be favored. SDSU will likely finish third. For the women, it will be closer and SDSU has a shot at beating USD but SDSU may be an underdog. I think NDSU will win the women's conference title.

I still don't care about the corn cup.
