  • SDSU's athletic program in perspective

Per several SDSU press releases, there are currently "over 550" student athletes at SDSU right now.

Here's how that stacks up with the "Power 5"

    Big Ten:
    Purdue - 492
    Northwestern - 487
    Illinois - 513
    Maryland - 550

As many or more than 4 of 14.

    Pac 12:
    Oregon State - 504
    Washington State - 527
    Arizona State - 481
    University of Arizona - 444
    University of Utah - 447
    University of Colorado - 336
    University of Oregon - 478

    More than 7 of 12.

    Big 12:
    Texas Tech - 421
    TCU - 480
    Oklahoma State - 473
    Oklahoma - 541
    Kansas - 487
    Kansas Sate - 499
    Iowa State - 421
    West Virginia - 545

More than every school except Texas.

    ACC:
    Clemson - 471
    Florida State - 535
    Georgia Tech - 395
    Miami - 409
    NC State - 489
    Pitt - 475
    Wake Forest 384

    More than 7 of 14.

    SEC:
    Mizzou - 512
    Arkansas - 462
    LSU - 438
    Ole Miss - 384
    Mississippi State - 377
    Auburn - 503
    Tennessee - 533
    Vanderbilt - 343
    Kentucky - 508
    South Carolina - 546
    Florida - 513

Only Alabama, Georgia and TAMU have more student athletes.

In short, SDSU's headcount is higher than over half the schools in the "Power 5" conferences. So whenever a school like, oh, say Oregon, says that they can't afford to have both baseball AND wrestling.........

Funny, half of Terry's AL live chat today was about "which new sport should we add"

Re: SDSU's athletic program in perspective

Know we have a lot of athletes because we have chosen to have a lot of sports. Throw in Title Nine and it means we have to have a lot of women's teams with enough participants to offset any D-1 FCS school with football as a sport. Soccer and equestrian are basically the only reason we were able to keep our wrestlers and baseball. There is a drawback to that, obviously, in that it means available funds are split into a bigger pie. We've been able to hang in there, but that explains comments I've made in other posts over the years, that it is a wonder that we can compete with programs like NDSU, who have fewer sports and more money. The Bison don't have cross country, golf, tennis or swimming/diving on the men's side. Do have golf and cross country, but not swimming/diving or equestrian on the women's side.

You are right, tried to remember the sports and goofed that one. Also forgot to list tennis on the women's side. But they still have two less men's sports, and the women three less, than SDSU. That's five less programs, with coaches, assistant coaches, travel expenses, team expenses, and scholarship support...all in basically non-revenue sports.

That may be the most topical post ever made in any thread.
