  • Women’s Wrestling

Any thoughts of SDSU starting women’s wrestling. With girls wrestling growing in the state/region, might be a great fit with a low start up cost with the new facility. Maybe a chance to be at the front of the pack with Iowa (who already announced adding W Wrestling)

I know in state DWU and USF are starting programs. High school girls wrestling in South Dakota has really take off the past few years. I’m not sure I would be a season ticket holder but I would definitely support it being added at SDSU. Should be fairly low cost and adds more women’s scholarships.

Could always offer season tickets for both like basketball

Does anyone know if the new building includes women's locker room facilities (or a reasonable option to add them)?

My assumption is you would have doubleheader duals if you had both programs, that would seem to make sense. Women's wrestling taking off would hopefully make it so the # of max scholarships would be raised by the NCAA, easier to keep Title IX compliant

I would think it would be a net positive to drop equestrian and add women’s wrestling. Makes too much sense in my opinion.

Then tear down the equestrian facility and develop the land… that would create quite the tailgate scene if you can safely get pedestrians across 14!

Close the 14 bypass on game days.

How many scholarships does equestrian have vs. what women's wrestling could have? From what I recall the reason they started an equestrian program was because they could have quite a few scholarships to balance the male sports.

I don't like eliminating a sport to start another. Keep them both. Equestrian at SDSU makes sense to me, women's wrestling seems like a great add. I also like the idea of bowling. 3 very different sports catering to very different athletes, all creating more opportunities for student-athletes.

I do not see women's wrestling being added at SDSU any time soon. Most additions across the country have been in non-scholarship programs (D3) or NAIA where there are a surplus of athletic aid.

That may be right, I have no idea. But D2 USF just added womens wrestling and just signed their first recruiting class. The Iowa Hawkeyes also started a women’s program. The tide is coming.

I hope the tide is coming! I just don't think it will take off at the D1 level as quickly as it has at other divisions.

NCAA declared it as an emerging sport status a couple years ago so it’s definitely coming

Seems like a sport that SDSU could be very successful in

Just to review, SDSU offers the following intercollegiate sports:
                              Men:
                              Baseball
                              Basketball
                              Cross-Country
                              Football
                              Golf
                              Swimming and Diving
                              Track and Field
                              Wrestling

                              Women:
                              Basketball
                              Cross country
                              Equestrian
                              Golf
                              Soccer
                              Softball
                              Swimming and Diving
                              Track and Field
                              Volleyball

I haven't looked latey, but at one time this was the most sports offered by any Summit League school. Don't know for sure about the MVFC schools but wouldn't be surprised if it was if not the most then close to it.
