Will any of the redshirt freshman crack the stating lineup?

125: Jordan is the front runner with Roybal pushing for the spot who was 10-5 in redshirt, this will get shaken out in opens at the beginning of the year
133: Tagg leads the way with Cardinal having an 11-7 season in redshirt, same as 125 but it is Tagg until proven otherwise
        141: Carlson
149: Kimball beat Martin in December 7-0, Martin was 21-7 in redshirt. This will be decided in opens and probably won't be completely figured out till after the first of the year. Redshirts have a tendency to make pretty good jumps the second year in college.
157: Swenson went 18-11 in redshirt and appears to be the front runner over Thomsen who he beat 15-3 but will be decided at the open tournaments in Nov. We will be pretty green at this weight to start out the year no matter who is starting.
165: Cook till proven otherwise, Gaynor was 7-6 in redshirt and Klinkhammer is coming off knee surgery so will be curious to see how he has recovered. I know there has been chatter of Cook to 157 but I haven't talked to anyone on staff about this to see if there is any truth to that or just forum chatter.
        174: Devos
184: King's weight at the moment but he has Kruger (17-9) and Rogotzke (11-2) who both had solid redshirt years who are going to push him, along with Schoon. Open tournaments will decide who goes here. King does have a redshirt yet but I have no idea if he wants to use it.
        197: Sloan
        285: Nevills

If i was a betting man here is the order of most likely, in my mind, to have a redshirt freshman starting out the gate: 157, 149, 125, 184, 133, 165

Tanner Cook said it on Jackrabbit Illustrated podcast earlier this year that he wanted to go down to 157 but sounded like Simaz didn't want him too

It will be interesting to see how the coaches look at this going forward. Definitely might be something they entertain next year.

                A couple of notes

Hahn mentioned that Tagg was wanting to go to the military at some point. I'm not sure if that means after he finishes his eligibility up or before.
Martin could go up to and challenge Swenson, he did finish the year at 157 and looked very good. In my eyes, he is the better option.
I'm very excited to see what Klinkhammer does next year though I don't think that he starts. SDSU may be relying on him in the future depending on how recruiting goes.
Bennett Berge could start right away if he is as good as he is billed to be and nothing funny happens but I don't think the coaching staff makes that move with the kind of depth that they have at 184.
SDSU has very good depth top to bottom next year. I hope that they find a lot of open tournaments to allow the non-starters to compete.

I like the fact that we will finally have some depth (excluding red shirts) at most classes so we can rest starters from time to time in duals and still be very competitive. It's a long season and this will be one of the first times the staff will have some flexibility to do so.

                    Not considering the portal:

                    125 Jordan
                    133 Tagg
                    141 Carlson
                    149 Martin
                    157 Swenson
                    165 Cook
                    174 DeVos
                    184 King
                    197 Sloan
                    285 Nevills

What weights would SDSU consider entertaining a transfer?

125 and 149 are the weakest weights, but this is a pretty well balanced team and Jordan and Kimball / Martin will probably both have winning duel records next year. Stevo Poulin at 125 and Dom Demas at 149 are the only people who have announced that they are in the portal who would have a chance to start.

I don’t think I’d call Martin weak. 21-7 and ending on a 7 match win streak looks like a redshirt who was figuring it out. Add in his high school pedigree and should be in line for a solid season with maybe some big upsets mixed in.

Somebody with inside knowledge is there any chance that Tagg could make 125 and get Cardinal in the line up at 133? Or could Cardinal make 125 and push Jordan? Cardinal was another one of our redshirts that seemed to turn a major corner as the year went on and be intrigued to see him start this year!

I have zero inside knowledge, I just think this is a great problem to have. We have a solid core of wrestlers returning and a great group of redshirts trying to fight there way into the starting lineup. Not knowing the actual 2022/2023 lineup in April 2022 is a good thing, because it shows the quality of the depth this team now has. It took time to build that, it wasn’t that many years ago we didn’t know who the 125 would be, not because we had so many quality guys at that weight, but simply because we didn’t have anyone on the roster, and luckily coapstick filled in and gave it his all that year as a true freshman. Or having king fill in as a true freshman. Now we have depth where we don’t have to rush recruits into the starting lineup their true freshman years. They can get settled in with a redshirt year and then be unleashed to take names and crush skulls.
