Greetings from Brookings –
October is here and the weather is changing which can only mean one thing - the season is right around the corner. The team is working hard in the wrestling room, weight room and classroom. Weight certifications are this week and official practice starts on Wednesday, October 10. I have been impressed with the work the guys have been putting in and am anxious to see it play out on the mat. We are a month away from the Dak Open on November 4 and I hope to see many of you that weekend.
We have a new group of Jackrabbits in our room as we welcomed a large freshman class of nine new wrestlers. Our newbies are Clay Carlson, Gregory Coapstick, Dalton Lakmann, Alex Lloyd, Bowen McConville, Kenny O’Neil, Zach Price, Russel Rucklos and Tanner Sloan. Make sure you follow our social media and look out for #FreshmanFriday as we profile one of these young men each week. We also have a new face on the team with transfer Laken Cook who came to us from Appalachian State.
In my last newsletter, I shared a few ways to #STAYJACKED and you did not disappoint! Our One Day For State giving campaign was a huge success. Wrestling accounted for nearly half of all gifts to the Athletics department with 173 gifts. The effort around this campaign was impressive and we appreciate every single gift. We had people in 17 different states give to our program (including some new SDSU fans from The Last Frontier) and Coach Simaz and I are happy to report that we even managed to convert some Cornellians into Jackrabbits and will continue to work on increasing our east coast donor base.
Our annual Jackrabbit Wrestling Club golf outing was held on September 22 and it was a record breaking event. We had a full lineup of foursomes and some of them even knew how to golf! It was a fantastic day and I was happy that we got to spend time meeting many of you and learning about your love of the program. Thank you to all our incredible sponsors – especially Brandon Haag (Corteva) and Dean Mueller (Combined Insurance) who provided the title sponsorships. We also held our first annual #STAYJACKED golf ball drop. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ball. While going up in the chopper was my least favorite part of the day, I’m glad everyone was able to get a good laugh at my expense. Someone could have told me how unsteady a helicopter ride feels before I left the ground…don’t tell Coach Caldwell but he’s been nominated to carry out next year’s drop.
Get your gear: we have a limited-time only ONLINE STORE open right now. Not only can you get your Jackrabbit gear for the season but you can help us raise funds for our Regional Training Center. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to our club. The store closes on October 12 (next Friday) so please get your order in soon. You can pick up your order in Brookings or shipping is also available. And just to see if you have stayed with me until the end of my ramblings, we have a special offer for you. The first five people to send me an email (damion.hahn@sdstate.edu) with their order confirmation, we will pay for your shipping.
That’s all for now.

Damion
