Missed opportunities almost cost Jacks, Panthers
    By Nick Hartley
The 2007 Jackrabbit soccer season opened at home versus a hungry University of Northern Iowa Panther team. In the previous two meetings the Panthers have lost by a combined score of 5-1 and led the series 2-0. But in the end, neither team could muster enough opportunities to win the game ending in a season opening 1-1 tie.
The Jacks had a solid shot at goal 18:30 into the match when a Chelsea Goosen shot went just inches above goalkeeper Heidi O’Mara. Almost 33 minutes into the game the Jacks found the back of the net as Tory Sclitgen scored her first career goal, assisted by Kellyn Farrell, went past O’Mara for the first goal of the young season. The rest of the first half featured many opportunities for the Panthers to get themselves on the board but Nicole Lograsso stopped three shots to leave the score at 1-0 going into halftime in favor of the Jacks.
The start of the second half featured Kelsey Worcester sent a pop fly of a shot towards the goal two minutes into the second half that was stopped by O’Mara. During the 57 minute of the match, a hard shot by Chelsie Hochstedler that made its way past Lograsso to tie it all up at 1. Soon after both teams went quiet missing many golden opportunities to put themselves ahead, including one by Erin Kasmarik in front of an empty goal with five minutes left. Unfortunately, that was the end of any solid scoring opportunities for either time in regulation.
The first overtime was went by quick and painless as both teams had decent opportunities to find the back of the goal but came up short. The second overtime featured a Kellyn Farrell shot on goal that was just inches away from ending the game 43 seconds in. The rest of the overtime was quiet.
“We like to spread the ball out and attack. We did that well in the second half but not so good in the first. We created dangerous opportunities, but being the first game of the year we need to sharpen our skills. We got a decent amount of shots, but not as many quality opportunities as we needed to create,” said coach Lang Wedemeyer about his team’s play tonight. When asked about the team’s deep freshmen core getting a lot of playing time tonight, Wedemeyer commented on their hard work, “The [freshmen] girls that played many minutes tonight. Tory, Kaitlin [Justice], and Emily Quigley all have earned it through preseason.”
Lograsso came up big in goal stopping six UNI shots. Kellyn Farrell had seven shots to lead the Jacks tonight. Kasmarik, Worcester and Sclitgen all chipped in with two shots for the Jacks.
Up next for the Jacks is the Summit League conference opener against perennial powerhouse Oakland University at Fishback Soccer Complex on September 7 at 7:00.
