UVSC & South Dakota State Punch Semi-Final Tickets

Washington, DC- West has been best, so far, in the 2006 United Soccer Conference Tournament, hosted by Howard University.

In the opening two quarter-final matches today at Greene Stadium, it was West #4 Utah Valley State upsetting East #1 Delaware State, 2-1. While the West's #2 seed South Dakota State had no problem with East #3 Howard, dropping the Bison 8-0. . . .

South Dakota State joins UVSC in the semi-finals with an 8-0 victory over Howard, who only had only had 10 healthy players for the match.

Kellyn Farrell, Chelsea Goosen, and Heather Hill each scored a pair of goals for the Jackrabbits. Hill and Farrell also assisted on goals.

Howard did not get a shot on goal in the match.

With UVSC and SDSU in the semi-finals, the other two semi-final teams will be decided tonight when IPFW takes on Longwood and North Dakota State battles South Carolina State. (read more)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kellyn Farrell netted the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the South Dakota State University women’s soccer team won the United Soccer Conference tournament Sunday morning.

Farrell put SDSU on the board in the 71st minute of the match, scoring off an assist from Kelsey Worcester.

“The thing that I am most proud of is that in the middle of the year when things weren’t going our way, the girls on the team stayed positive, worked very hard and climbed their way back to where they belong,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer, who has directed the program since its inception in 2000. . . . WASHINGTON – South Dakota State’s Kellyn Farrell scored in the second half to lift the Jackrabbits past North Dakota State 1-0 in the United Soccer Conference women’s tournament final Sunday.

“I thought we had four or five really good chances and South Dakota State had one,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “They scored and we didn’t.”

NDSU finished the season at 13-7-1.

“It’s a great accomplishment for our team,” Cuadrado said. “I’m very proud of our team. Unfortunately, we just didn’t get the bounces.”

NDSU goalie Monica Morgan finished with seven saves. SDSU goalie Nicole Lograsso stopped six shots. . . . (read more)

Closing the season with a 4-0-1 record, the Jacks recovered from a terrible middle portion of the season to win the United Soccer Conference Tournament during their first year in the conference.

Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer said the team felt like they played well all season long, but they just were not getting the breaks and bounces.

"We kept encouraging the girls to work hard ... and they definitely did," said Wedemeyer.

In the first game of the tournament, the Jacks defeated Howard University, 8-0.

The second game was much closer, as the Jacks faced a tough Utah Valley State squad in the semifinals. SDSU needed a shootout to defeat the Wolverines after battling them to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.

Wedemeyer said the team outplayed Utah Valley State and probably should have won in overtime, but the team had prepared for the possibility of a penalty kick contest before the tournament started.

In the championship game, the Jackrabbits avenged an earlier season 1-0 loss to fellow USC newcomer North Dakota State University.

Wedemeyer said the earlier loss to NDSU was very tough because the team felt they could have won the game. He said the girls wanted another chance to play against NDSU in the tournament.

In the 74th minute of the championship game, Kellyn Farrell received a pass from Kelsey Worcester and headed the ball past NDSU keeper Monica Morgan.

"I felt like it was a great tournament. It was great to have something at the end of the season," said Wedemeyer.

The Jacks played their best soccer at the end of the season.

"We definitely peaked at the right time," said Wedemeyer. . . . (read more)
