    Re: Cala Westergard off team

My guess would be the legs just didn't heal enough for her to think she was going to be productive. If I'm correct, I believe Cala didn't play her senior year because of knee surgery. Coach took a chance with her because he saw her play as a junior and he knew he didn't need another center last year so he could redshirt her and give her an extra year to heal. I do wish her the best of luck in the future.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

The writing was on the wall when Katie Lingle started seeing time as the third center in the rotation, and Cala was still on the bench. It just didn't work out for her, and I can understand how spending all the time that athletics takes, when you aren't going to play, can be hard. My very best wishes to her as she continues as a student at SDSU...still as good as it gets!

As part of the discussion among AJ, TV and Tyler was comparible situation to Laura Nielson from a year ago. An interested/spirited comment between TV & TM after AJ departed was if this would free up a WBB schollie for next year.

        From the GoJacks.com WBB write-up:

WESTERGARD LEAVES TEAM: Redshirt freshman center Cala Westergard has decided to leave the team, head coach Aaron Johnston announced this week. A native of Charles City, Iowa, Westergard averaged 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in nine games. She recorded highs of seven points and four rebounds in the Jackrabbits’ victory at IUPUI on Dec. 7.
Westergard intends to continue her education at South Dakota State.

I do not have a clue and those who do probably want to protect her privacy as a person and are not likely to add anything to this thread. I think any of our student athletes who want to walk away form their athletic scholarships for any reason, is their own private business and their choice. We know now she left the team to concentrate on studies. Practice and travel take a great deal time and that's why I think our athletes earn their paid education, and its tougher than working part time at Daktronics or Boss Pizza or any where else. So the full ride is not a free ride, it takes a great deal of time and effort.

I am not going to post any more on this thread, because its private matter and a private choice. What else is left to be said?
Did I intend to know the circumstances? I just stated that it seems way more common in women sports. I agree that a full-ride is not a free-ride, a good friend of mine turned down numerous scholarships because he didn't want to be tide down. I had 2 friends quit the USD football team because they said the scholarships weren't worth it. I never attacked her for it, and I wasn't critical.

It seems to me that some people have a problem with me and then grasp at straws when they can't find something to complain about. Well I'll give everybody a little advise, if you wait a day or two I'll f up and make some dumb comment and I'll deserve the criticism for it.

I wish Cala the best, I wish things would of worked out different and wish her the best at whatever her future plans detail.

I will accept this explanation since Jack#1 does not live in Tyndall and you are not a student at BHSU. You follow very closely and do talk to numerous people on campus who are closer to this situation than most of us. I have not followed lately so hardly know many names, but I too wish Ms. Westegard the best in life and whether she chooses to stay at SDSU or chooses to transfer at the end of spring semester, it again is a personal choice. And at the ripe age of 68 I am now finding what aching knees are all about, for Cala I sure its been very painful and demanding to get back to that pre-injury level. Again my best wishes to Cala.

Juuust a bit snarky. Your first comment on this was good let's all leave it alone.
I for one am really disappointed for Ms. Westegard. When one is a fan from afar, like I am, we tend to look a lot at stats etc. I was hoping Cala was going to be the person to replace Jenn this year. Too bad, it is so petty to say it but "that's life". When we look at the big picture, may it be a minor speed bump while she proceeds to bigger and better things.

I forgot my green smiley sorry, as I was trying to be funny. Joeboo is okay most of the time and I think he maturing pretty good for a very young man. I am not one for grabbing straws, I might enjoy teasing him a bit, but nothing personal at all. When any recuited athlete leaves the program its not a good thing, but I also recognize everyone is an individual and has a private life and makes choices. Maybe thats why letter of intents are one year contracts, and that does make sense to me as a non-legally trained layman.

If there is nobody that interests the coaching staff in the 2010 class perhaps they will wait and use Cala's scholarship for someone in the 2011 class that we didn't think we could offer due to no available scholarships. Someone like Mercedes Stotesberry at Washington is someone that comes to mind.

Cala was pretty good shooter, must've been too hard on her knees, shouldn't even guess as to why she chose to give up her scholarship, but hope we get another good player & good student like she was.Again best of luck to Cala.

That would mean we'd only have 14 players on the roster for next year,& then the next year we'd have 4 freshmen again...getting kind of weak in the experience catagory again. The year 2011-2012 we'd have sr leaders, J Young,V Johnson,& J Sunnarborg, with jr.'s this yrs freshmen, Dietel,Paluch,Eide,& Lingle, then second yr players Hieser, Waytashek, Strop, & Boever (Gabby),with freshmen Walters & those yet to be determined. Maybe this yrs freshmen will develop enough to carry a season of four freshmen in two more years, maybe not.
