  • Cala Westergard off team

Broken at TV's live blog today.

From AJ: She's healthy. She just hasn't been exactly where we want. We'll see if that changes. In fact, Cala is no longer going to be with us. It'll be released in a few hours. (Breaking news.)

    Good luck Cala at SDSU

Sounded like it was definitely her decision and that she wants to concentrate on school and does plan to stay at SDSU. Best of luck to Cala.

Is this a female thing? I'm not trying to start anything, but it seems that when MEN quit they transfer, and a lot of times the women will quit, and still continue with the same school. Maybe I am way off base, but I've seen it with a few at BHSU, I saw it at Mt. Marty and DWU, and SDSU has had a few similar cases. I think injuries is a lot of it, with women not being able to return to the status they were before, but I don't know.

EXACTLY, YOU DON'T KNOW, so why bring up gender sterotypes

The last SDSU women's player that left the team was not because of injury and being unable to return to her prior status......she left because she was putting her education first. I'm with Nidaros, don't bring up gender stereotypes when you don't have a clue.

Well, AJ mentioned in the video blog that compared to other sports, many of the players that have left the team have remained at SDSU. He felt good about that because it reinforced the idea of recruiting students that fit at SDSU, and not just the program. So if JoeBoo noticed that also, maybe he is just observant and not a male chauvinist pig.

                Re: Cala Westergard off team

I suspect that joeboo has identified a valid sociological point (albeit expressed rather clumsily).

Guys tend to be identified more by What They Do than women tend to be. Women tend to be defined by who they know, and the nature and quality of their relationships.

Guys tend to "be" whatever their jobs--or sometimes their hobbies or avocations--are. Those are what give their lives the most meaning and importance. Friendships and relationships are important to men, but those aren't what define them as people.

Women tend to "be" whatever their friendships and other relationships are--those things are what they tend to see as being the most important, at least in our culture.

That's what my friend Captain Morgan tells me tonight, anyway.

I didn't mean it in an offensive way. In my experiences it seems like it happens on a way more frequency with women sports then it does for men (not that it happens a lot), and I was wondering if I was way off base with that or if it happens most places.

I could go off into left field and make assumptions on why I think it happens

And die a lonely old man.

At least if you're dumb enough to voice those assumptions around members of the gender in question.

                      Re: Cala Westergard off team

I've been wondering all day which thread to post this in:

Make pie. Share pie. Eat pie. National Pie Day!

My work, gentle Jackrabbits, is now done for the day.

Good night to you all, and I really hate IPFW.

I can understand. Don't worry about it.

                          Re: Cala Westergard off team

Okay maybe Joe was not trying to sterotype, but his general comments are very irriating sometimes especially when he has no knowledge of what is going on in Ms Westergard's mind or her life. I do not have a clue and those who do probably want to protect her privacy as a person and are not likely to add anything to this thread. I think any of our student athletes who want to walk away form their athletic scholarships for any reason, is their own private business and their choice. We know now she left the team to concentrate on studies. Practice and travel take a great deal time and that's why I think our athletes earn their paid education, and its tougher than working part time at Daktronics or Boss Pizza or any where else. So the full ride is not a free ride, it takes a great deal of time and effort.

I am not going to post any more on this thread, because its private matter and a private choice. What else is left to be said?

A general question on a situation like this. Does the school/athletic department have the option to move her full-ride from an athletic schollie to a more general one?

It is a shame that she is leaving the team, but at least she has her head on straight and will continue her education.

I think she just saw the writing on the wall, Not much playing time, players coming in with more ability maybe than her leading to not much playing time. Two bad knees and all the practice time and travel leading to not much playing time. Frankly, I don't see how these athletes can do it and lead the nation in GPA when they are on the road two to four days a week, three hours or so of practice a day and all the other pressures of playing sports. Good luck to Cala, hope she left under good circumstances and not bad, and maybe the door is open for her to return at a later date.
