Buy more season tickets. Talk your friends and neighbors into doing the same.

Give to the Jackrabbit Club and get the scholarships funded through the endowment, rather than scholarship dollars having to come from the annual operating budget.

Notice who's advertising with the Jackrabbits--in the venues, in the game programs, on GoJacks.com, and send those advertisers the occasional note telling them you've noticed, and it makes a difference with your buying decisions--and follow through with that, too. Word like that gets around among business owners, trust me.

We need to continue to do everything we reasonably can to increase the dollars coming into the Athletic Department. That's the best way we fans can get higher salaries to good folks like Christie and the rest of the Athletic Department staff.

The ticket manager, Christi Williams, makes $30,400 a year. That is flat shameful. That young lady works her tail off, listens to more complaints (day in and day out) than an athletic director ever will, and has to be a great public relations representative for the entire university. Yet, some will say, "Well, that's the way it goes. Maybe next year things will be better."

It isn't right. Period.

Actually, according to open.sd.gov, she made $36,341 last year. But your point is still very much valid.

JimmyJack, I got my information from the Argus Leader site which lists state employee salaries. Filbert, even if more dollars come from the private side, that money will be directed to athletic programs. Every coach wants more. My beef is non-recognition of the critical nature of the ticket manager position, the amount of time that person puts in (far more than 40 hours a week ... no overtime given) and the beating that person takes from masses of people who think they deserve better seats. To place the burden on private dollars takes away the responsibility of the state of South Dakota, the Board of Regents and SDSU to treat the position fairly.

The Argus leader site is information from 2 years ago. If you want current salaries go to OpenSD. The amounts there are real time, upto the minute salaries.

Click on "Payroll Information" and then "Employees" and search for anybody who works for the state. You'll get their salary and job classification. That's the State of South Dakota site that lists updated employee salaries. I think they're updated monthly or something like that. As mentioned, it's much newer information than the Argus has.

I absolutely agree with your point. Take some time with the open.sd.gov site and you'll see that pretty much every state employee is underpaid for their qualifications and/or job duties.

Although, on the salary end of things, in all fairness, state workers get fairly generous benefits (leave accrual rates, max leave, health care, pension).

I'm not saying they're -not- underpaid, but they do get some fairly decent benefits to go along with the low pay.

I would say that used to be the case in regards to the benefit packages being better than many similar private positions. However, one of the reasons I left state employment was because that had nearly equalized except for paid holidays. In fact, most positions that I compared to had better overall vacation packages which nearly evened out the holidays.

One other caution I would make is not to confuse all public positions. The benefits my wife has through the Sioux Falls school district are pretty good. Her retirement was more than double what I received through the State of SD. However these benefits have also begun to come back to private sector levels.

I worked for my former employer for about 6 years. When I started the health insurance benefits were not comparable (wife's better). After 6 years we would have switched and saved a great deal of money, but couldn't because my employer only allowed enrollment at time of hire (or other life changing events).

The Sioux Falls School District is in the state retirmenet system. They have the same retirement plan as do state/regents employees.

Ticket manager is one of many positions that fall under that same issue. You don't even want to know what the equipment manager with 25 years in and who oversees over $200K in expenditures each year gets paid. (of course I may have some personal feelings about that one.)

Sort of. The money goes into the same fund, but the state would contribute exactly one half what the SF school district would (3% vs. 6%).

The state also contributes 6% and has for several years. It used to be 5% before about 2005. If you leave early (I think less than 3 years) you only receive 75% of the state's contribution if you withdraw your funds but the state contributes the same as all other groups in the plan.

I left the employ of the state long before that, but the point that I was making was that different public sectors pay differently and have different benefit structures.

I haven't read through every post in this thread but has anyone brought up Ben Dewaard as a possible candidate? He knows the system and the ins and outs of the program. Just wondering if he would be a candidate.

I believe Emily Gusso is the new assistant. A few years ago she was a Grad. Assistant. Deb Remmarde will be a Grad. Assistant this year.
