This is pretty cool, and very well deserved.

Article from Terry in today's Argus. Some quotes from Jenn and a tidbit about her continuing her career in elementary education rather than play professional basketball.

Warkenthien gets honorable mention in AP awards
      Terry Vandrovec • April 1, 2009

With 15 scholarship spots available on each of 340 teams, there are as many as 5,100 women's basketball players at the NCAA Division I level - and South Dakota State senior Jenn Warkenthien has been honored as one of the top 50.

The 6-foot forward from Willow Lake was named honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday, the first Jackrabbit to earn that distinction at the D-I level.

Warkenthien averaged 15.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, while also leading SDSU in steals (52), blocks (41), field-goal shooting (51.8 percent) and free-throw shooting (82.2 percent) and earning Summit League player of the year honors.

"It's just kind of a nice way to cap off a senior season and a career," she said. "It goes to show how well our team did. You're not going to have a player get an award like that on a team that wasn't playing well."

The Jacks were ranked No. 16 in the final Associated Press poll, won regular-season and postseason titles in the Summit League and advanced to the Division I tournament in their first year of eligibility. SDSU fell to Baylor on a last-second shot in the second round of the Big Dance, finishing the season at 32-3.

All the team and individual success has done nothing to change Warkenthien's plan for the future.

Congrats to Jenn and her team. I am sure Jenn will include her teammates in this recognition. Just the kind of person she is. Excellent proof that good things happen to good people. Jenn has clearly raised the bar for SDSU WBB. Somewhere out there is another Jenn or two - we simply need to find them. Or, just maybe thanks to Jenn they will find us? Thanks for everything you have done for SDSU. Money could not buy the type of recognition you have given to Jacks WBB and SDSU in general.

Best of luck in the future.

Re: Wark Makes HM AP All-American

It's kind of odd that the WBCA/ESPN coaches poll was the first to nationally rank us and the AP was a little bit hesitant to put SDSU on their poll. On the flip side of things, the WBCA did not even select Jenn for a spot on one of it's regional teams (let alone All-American), yet the AP selects her as honorable mention All-American. The world of sports, I tell ya! Congrats to Jenn, a player who really defines a true STUDENT-athlete in today's modern world of sports.
