They had to claw their way back into the Big Twelve semis and finals....
But they may be too tired, too exhausted for SDSU on Tuesday. Their starters play monster minutes, they've been on an emotional roller-coaster for weeks, and they haven't played a team like SDSU in a long time.
Just listened to the Baylor Asst. Coach on the radio and he was VERY impressed with SDSU... said AJ is one of the best coaches in WBB. That we are a tough match up for them... that they will have to guard everyone... basically implied that we are way better than a seven seed..
Said that the only teams we might have trouble with are going to be someone with a bruiser for a post...
I will agree there. Even though the Bears lost Danielle Wilson, Player and Morrow can score with the best of them. Morrow checked out of the game against UTSA but she can put up big points when she has her head in the game. She was the B12 Tourney MOP. She disappeared last night for some reason. Jones and Allison are as tough as nails and will claw, fight, push, pull, and bite to win a rebound or loose ball.

In the Big 12 tournament semi-final, Baylor led most of the game. ISU put up a run at the end of the game, but Baylor held them off with absolute clutch outside shooting. What you saw against UTSA was HOF Coach Leon Barmore's old La Tech style, pound the ball inside on offense. In the Big 12 tournament, Baylor beat Iowa State with outstanding outside shooting (9-14) as mentioned in the game recap...
You may be thinking about Baylor's quarterfinal game where they were asleep in the first half against #10 Oklahoma State. Mulkey woke them up at halftime.

Baylor may very well be mentally exhausted with Coach Mulkey's medical condition or they may want to "win one for Mulkey" and be extra fired up.
The Bears won 3 games in 3 days at the Big 12 tournament over Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Texas A&M and looked just fine. I promise you a Mulkey team is well conditioned enough to play 2 games, even an overtime game, with a day of rest, at top level physically.
I must respectfully disagree with the comment that they haven't played a team like SDSU in a long time. Iowa State is very much like SDSU. I give Warkenthien and Boever a nod over ISU's big girls. But ISU's two guards, Lacey and Ezell, are just as good if not a bit better than SDSU's. I'd say SDSU has a better supporting cast outside of those 4. Iowa St lead the Big 12 conference in defense with a man defense very similar to SDSU's. Baylor beat Iowa State twice this season, as recently as Mar. 14 at the Big 12 tournament. Baylor also beat Kansas St. and Stanford.
The Bears lost 4 in conference. Twice to Oklahoma but they beat Oklahoma twice in the prior year. They lost to instate rival Texas and they lost to Kansas, a team who got hot at the end of the season in the game right after Baylor lost Wilson. The Big 12 had 10 teams qualify for post season play as the #1 RPI conference in D1.

SDSU might well beat Baylor but I don't think it will be because the Bears are physically tired or because they haven't seen a similar style of play.
Over on the Baylor vs. SDSU thread, I mentioned that Baylor should be as well conditioned as SDSU--SDSU's not going to out muscle them.
However, when I say that Baylor hasn't played a team like SDSU in a while, it's knowing that Iowa State plays a -similar- style (man defense and a deep bench).
Where I say SDSU is different than Iowa State (and I may not be as familiar with Iowa State as I should be) is that SDSU is not only capable of turning man defenses inside out, that is their strategy. Their players, almost without exception, can play a size up, or a size down--they create matchup problems not necessarily because of conditioning or superior athletic ability, but because all their players have been taught how to draw defenders into awkward situations and then capitalize on that.
My take is that Baylor probably deserved a 2 seed, winning the Big 12 tournament. The Big 12 is a TOUGH women's basketball conference. SDSU won comfortably but not decisively against Missouri, who was a bottom-tier Big 12 tier. Don't underestimate how good a conference the Big 12 is.
SDSU is probably better than the 7 seed we got, but we're not a 2 seed, either.
It will take a superior effort from our ladies to beat the Bears. They'll be the underdog, but they certainly aren't a prohibitive underdog. It will also take a better effort from Baylor than they showed against UTSA to beat the Jackrabbits.
As we've talked about all season long, SDSU is EXTREMELY difficult for most teams to match up with--we've simply got too many good outside shooters, meaning that unless a team plays with incredible, sustained defensive intensity, we will have a good shooter open, and the Jackrabbits have shown that they'll find the open shooter.
That said, a cold night from outside in the tournament will mean an SDSU loss, as the opponent will then be able to sag back and take away Warkenthien, Boever, and the dribble-drive to the basket. (Of course, if they do that, there's always the chance that Rotert and/or Young will go off on them.) SDSU needs to hit the 3's to win in the tournament. If they're as hot as they were against TCU, the Jackrabbits are a tough out for almost anybody. (I'm not ready yet to say they're ready to take on UConn, though. )
ADDS: Aargh. Wrong thread. Will re-post to the Baylor v. SDSU thread.
...they create matchup problems not necessarily because of conditioning or superior athletic ability, but because all their players have been taught how to draw defenders into awkward situations and then capitalize on that.
I agree that SDSU's size and basketball IQ help them to invert their defense with switching whenever necessary and that is a great benefit.
In some respects that means that Baylor will be looking in a mirror Tuesday night. Rachel Allison, Melissa Jones and Morghan Medlock can defend inside and outside. And play offense inside and outside. Power forward Medlock guarded UTSA's PG quite a bit in the second half.
If Morrow is hitting her outside shot, it won't matter how closely she is guarded. She just needs a fraction of a second, like Jill Young.
