  • Jenn Warkenthien All American

Sorry if someone else has started a thread on this or if it has been mentioned elsewhere, but IMO Jenn Warkenthien warrants serious looks as a first team All American.

She leads a ranked team in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks, and steals. I seriously wonder if there has ever been a college basketball player (men's or womens) who has lead a top 25 team in 5 statistical categories. She is the best player on one of the best teams in the country.

I see in the paper tonight that she was named second team Academic All-American. That is special. Also, in his radio interview last week (910 Radio), AJ said she was the best basketball player during his tenure and that is saying a great deal considering the players he has coached.

While she's definitely the MVP of the team, I don't know that she's gonna have the eye-popping stats needed for people to notice her for first team. Majority of the people voting for the award will have never seen her play, unless they make a run in the tourney that is...

I agree...SDSU's relative obscurity on the major national WBB scene is going to hinder Jenn's chances at making the All-American lists. If we make a run in the tournament that would help a bunch but if not she'll be lucky to make the "honorable mention" list.

As a quick note, Oakland's Jessica Pike was also named to the 2nd team.

Three conferences placed two players on the All-America teams:

The Valley, the Summit, and the Ohio Valley (2 from Murray State).

I think if they see her do a little of everything, block shots, steal the ball, pass around a player using "enhanced english",do layups with either hand equally well, shoot the 3,....you know , a typical day for Jenn, they might slip her in.The NCAA tournament is the biggest showcase there is to display your skills. And if it doesn't happen, big deal, she's All-American in my book. I think though , they start eying potential All-Americans when they are say one of the top 50 girls in hoopgirlz, then they follow them from freshman to senior in college, they're usually from big name conferences, unless someone puts up spectacular stats they can't ignore, it's hard to break into this clique (sp) so to speak.

Agreed. And I think a big reason is b/c she hasn't played as many minutes as she could have b/c we have blown so many opponents out.

Not a chance a 14 point-per-gamer from Brookings gets first team, no way. Not that it takes away from this historical, magical, ground-breaking season!

                Re: Jenn Warkenthien All American

                Well, here's the problem:

In order for SDSU to have an All-American, their run would have to be due to, basically, one player.

                It ain't.

Coach of the Year for AJ isn't beyond possible, but with Auriemma & UConn, it can't be considered possible.

But seriously-----go outside Auriemma, and who looks good?

If UConn runs the table, he gets it and should considering the injuries they have incurred this year. If they don't, I think you would see votes of Oklahoma's coach, and possibly Maryland's, but if the Jacks get to the elite 8, AJ would likely then get a lot of consideration.

My question on this and All-American, is voting before or after the tourney? Some reason it seems to me that it is before, because don't they normally present the winners during the final four?

I think it depends upon which all american team you are talking about. I know that one of them is announced at the final four. But there are a handful of all american teams.

Graham Hays mentions Warkenthien as a "wild card" in his article narrowing down the top 15 players. Her picture is also in the story. The link is here:

It's UConn's year to win it partly because the rest of the field is rather weak. Maya Moore is the new Candace Parker but nobody else is going to challenge the Huskies this year.

                          Warkenthein top 15? G Hays: ESPN.com

Graham Hays on ESPN.com makes it clear Jenn Warkenthien should not only be rated as one of the top 30 players in the nation but probably should be on the top 15 list. He makes a good argument in his on-line column today (with a picture of Jenn, too).

"Jennifer Warkenthien, South Dakota State: I was, if not stunned, then significantly surprised when Warkenthien didn't show up on the midseason top 30 list for the Naismith Trophy that made the rounds Wednesday. She's the best player on one of the best stories of the season,..."

Hays' article is now the leader on the ESPN WBB index, with the by now familiar shot of #44 fighting for a loose ball......

I'd bet Lakes' last dollar that every single person who posts on this topic probably cares more about this than Jenn does, which would make it all the more special if she got it.
