I don't drink coffee or lattes, havent had a beer in months unfortunetly. 5 a month but several months during the season yeah maybe 20-30 for a most of the year but the point is its radio. Do you think they should start charging for talk radio and other radio broadcasts? I know its a better product I try to get to as many games as i can and i know they upped ticket prices for football not sure about bball which i am all for paying more for. If its only so much for internet broadcast, why not get a bunch of rich alumni or those who do not think its to expensive and pay for it as a sponsorship. it could be good advirtising if people went together for this site and then the internet feed could be free so those alumni over the country can listen just like we can here in the area. I know its not a big deal for it does not really affect me but i understand the point of the arguement.

It's $5 stinking dollars per month. Buy one less latte or two less beers each month and you have it covered. Or maybe skip eating out for lunch and brown bag it one day. If someone can't find or justify $5 to follow their team online then maybe there are other issues to be looked at. It used to be free. Now it isn't. Get over it!!! It's a better product (well except for MBB) at a better level, it's called a premium for a reason.

I agree I don't think it's really the money, but rather the principal/priorities for some of these guys complaining. I have to laugh at the comment "Have some rich alumnist pay for it". Is that always the answer? If that college degree doesn't allow you to spend $5.00 a month for a broadcast than maybe there are other issues.

I do not yet have that college degree. Im in my final semester. So I don't think i qualify for being a rich alumni. What that means is almost everyone here loves the jacks and would love to see most games as possible, however getting tickets for football as the price went up gets expensive to come up for a game. Not just tickets but gas, and food and going to an athletic event can be expensive. However the principle of being able to listen to the game seems a bit money hungry if you will. Just another way to make a dollar. I dont think this is the case here but it seems like it is not nessicary to charge for radio. Charge away for video by all means just save people the money and put it on for free, its just a thought but i know it wouldnt happen. Whats the rule for people assuming things about other posters here, ie, dont drink those extra beers, and if that college degree doesnt allow.....those comments don't really help anybody or provide a point of view about the topic.

I guess I don't understand any of these arguments. If you live in the coverage area, yes, radio is free over the air. If you don't, what are your options? Most universities charge for their athletic feeds. There is nothing unusual about it. Nobody is getting rich from the $5 a month people are paying, but to provide the service for free would be a substantial expense for the athletic department. Hook up a couple hundred audio or audio/video feeds for a few hours and let me know what your bandwidth bill looks like.

Do we really want the athletic department (or a donor) to spend 1/4 of a scholarship a month to provide something that really isn't very expensive for the end user?

Just want to be clear that I wasn't singling you out goon. Good for you though on not drinking lattes or spending extra on beers. Coming out of college it's good to have as little debt as possible, so if you have started making good spending choices already you're ahead of 99% of college grads.

Anyway, back to the topic, having worked in the athletic department leading into the transition I saw first hand the cost of putting our programs in the public eye (or ear). While it would be great to have an alum or corporate sponsor step up and take "ownership" of audio broadcasts on the internet so that what is free to those in WNAX's listening area be free to all it's just not feasible. Our corporate sponsors are tapped as it is, and there are not any new ones ready to step up to the plate. We all know how the current economy has affected all of us, and it's hitting home on the athletic department as well. As others have said, the fees charged for online broadcasts are often targeting visiting school's fans who have no other way to get the feed. Or, in my case, alums who live outside of WNAX's reach and want to keep up. I do agree that to charge for something that is free to some doesn't seem right. But I also know the alternative would be to say though s#!t to those outside of WNAX broadcast area and not have the games available on the internet. The fortunate thing is SDSU has taken upon itself to reach out to the masses in this day of a web connected world, there are still schools who haven't done that yet. With today's generation growing up on instant access to everything online it's great that SDSU's fans have the ability to not only listen to but watch select events from the comfort of their home. But, the web isn't free, someone pays for the content and this just happens to be one of those areas where paying a little pays off a lot in the end.

Good posts CatchEmAll and JimmyJack...the complaining posters pose the thought that radio is free. It is, if you live in the coverage area (and are happy with the strength and quality of the signal). But the department has to pay the bill to make the audio available to those joining in on the internet. There are real dollars involved, and that's why most schools charge for the feed. Last post for me on this thread...I think everything has been said on this subject that can be said.

thanks, I didnt really take it personally. I know we are all on the same proverbial team here. Just WNAX had free broadcasts before but with the gojacks site charging they no longer have it. It does not really affect me but I understand that its dollars and cents and its a business so it makes sense to have to charge sometimes. Maybe after i get my degree and become a rich alumni(i hope), then i can donate to athletics and sdsu in general like i wish i could now. Wishing i could help finacially with many things im envolved with im just not to the point where i can do my part yet. Maybe that could be a perk to donating money to the department. Not sure if there are perks now but maybe give a certain amount of coin and get certain internet things for free. It could help cover those costs and give a little more incentive for people to donate money. Im sure they have a lot of people though thinking about these things smarter then I am. Atleast we can all agree anyway in which we can support the jacks is whats really important.

I lied...one short one...nice post goon...I appreciated your comments. As a student you are financially supporting the Jacks through your student fee; when you buy an item from the bookstore that has the new Jacks logo on it, you are supporting athletics. I'm just proud you are a fan and will be one lifetime and do your share I'm sure.
