Fact is we need to make 3's in order to compete at the highest level. We can beat mediocre teams with our inside game and penetration for layups but we don't shoot well from 12-18 feet and teams with better inside players will shut down the inside game.

When we play against teams with better inside players who also have good guards we can't run as well as we would like and one of the strengths of our fastbreak game is the secondary break for open 3's.

This team needs to shoot a lot of 3's and needs to make 30% or better against good teams or we'll lose most if not all those games. AJ and the women know that, just need to get it done. Didn't get it done today.

Good point. I may have been over analyzing just a tad. But hey, I pretty much blew off my afternoon of work to follow the game, so I'm due a little bit of an over-reaction, aren't I?

I think we will learn a lot about the Jacks tomorrow when we see how they bounce back.

as for the court throwing you off... that only works the first half in my book.. both teams were dealing with the same situation... the terps found their shots first...

The fact that the game stayed as close as long as it did, with the Jacks shooting so off, While I am sad they lost, I don't think it was a bad loss at all...

(sorry just reread that amazing run-on sentence... yikes, I apologize)

            AJ's interview after the game...

He said he felt the girls played a poor 2nd half. Lost their toughness and got flat. He felt like we lost this game and it wasn't anything special that Maryland did to win it. He was disappointed in the 2nd half effort. Also mentioned we need more out of Ketty and Maria (I think?) who only had 10 points between the two of them.

He did speak highly of the first half and said it was once of the better defensive halves we've played recently. Commented that we are comparable to a top-25 team but when you get into a top-10 or top-8 team you are going to see a much higher level of athlete.

He said they need to find the positives in the game and focus on them. Come out the next two days and play hard against some good competition. Overall he was pleased with the 12-point deficit but disappointed that we didn't do enough in the 2nd half and let them have it easily.

You're right. You can learn quite a bit about a team when things are going well, but there are certain things that you can never know about a team until they have to bounce back from a tough loss.

my take is that we might have been hurting a little bit from not having macie available. Her intensity would be constant pressure on the point all game which seems we had a little sucsess trying traps and pressing the ball. when they were able to make passes and get position it was easy to score. which i guess that pretty much is the case for any team no matter how talented. the 3 shooting was not helping. Maybe if we made a few more inside or second chance rebounds we may have faired better from out side. I always feel that with AJs teams they are most effective running through the post as the first option then kicking out for 3s. When we get stuck swinging the ball around the perimeter just launching 3s we are not nearly as effective. sounds like they made some tough shots against our D which i think was good considering the rebounding we got against their size and getting them to turn the ball over several occasions.

Any body else remember the set screen plays to start the game a few years ago that nagy would run for hansen or moeller for the first play of the game? run though a few baseline screens, swing the ball around as they would pop to the top of the 3 for a wide open attempt. Duke would run something similar for JJ redick to get open for 3s, I would think that would be effective for Rotert or Young to get some good 3 point attempts and maybe build a little confidence getting some easy attempts. Just my thought.

Dont feel bad ladies, there will be a lot of teams losing to maryland by more then 12 this year. A few plays here and there and the game could have been much closer then we realize.

To shoot so bad and them shoot so good and to hang around and lose by 12. Plus it took till there was 4 minutes left. This was a tough loss but I think the Jacks gained some repect today from a top ten team. If the girls had been hitting a few more shots than they did I think they would have come out on top.

Maria had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals. I guess she could do more then that, but what is obvious is that we need out guards to get it done. Our posts (Jen, Maria, Stacie) had the most points respectively. If our outside game was on, I suspect our posts could have had bigger numbers as well.

Sorry, it wasn't Maria then. It was two people that had a total of 10 points. I know Ketty was one of them but I missed the other one.

"It was a hard-fought game," Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. "It was back and forth. I thought they did a great job taking us out of our actions in the first half. In the second, we were a lot more aggressive and made a lot of hustle plays. I'm proud of the fact that we were able to come back in the second half and, quite honestly, that we were able to make plays."

CANCUN, Mexico -- Kristi Toliver scored 16 points and Lynetta Kizer added 13 of her 15 points during a decisive run to help Maryland (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP) beat South Dakota State 68-56 on Wednesday at the Cancun Caribbean Challenge.

Kizer also had 10 rebounds. Demauria Liles added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Marissa Coleman had 15 points, four blocks and four steals for Maryland (4-1).

"It was a hard-fought game," Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. "It was back and forth. I thought they did a great job taking us out of our actions in the first half. Jennifer Warkenthien led the Jackrabbits (4-1) with 17 points.

Coleman moved into fifth place on Maryland's career scoring list with 1,631 points -- one ahead of Marcia Richardson. Toliver also climbed into ninth place with 1,520.

South Dakota State held a 25-18 lead with 2:44 left in the first half before Kizer and Maryland went on a 19-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a 37-29 lead with 14:43 remaining in the game. Kizer scored nine straight points to start the spurt and capped it off with a layup.

"We slowed down a little on the offensive end," Frese said of the play in the second half. "We wanted to create better shots and make the extra pass and just play unselfish basketball. I thought we were able to get in a better groove in the second half."

The round-robin tournament continues on Thursday with Maryland facing Montana and South Dakota State playing Illinois.
