  • Summit League Postseason Awards

I felt as though this deserved its own thread.

Here is the list of the all-Summit League teams. Terry has a great point in his last blog post:

Despite winning the league by four games, SDSU places only one player on the first or second teams. Ninth-place UMKC, by comparision, gets two.

It's eerily similar to what happened to the Summit League champion Jacks volleyball team. The moral of the story: SDSU seems to make better use of more scholarships than most schools in the conference. Having quality depth isn't good for picking up individual honors, but it seems to help win team awards.

    First team:
    Lisa Bue, NDSU
    Jernisha Cann, IUPUI
    Johnna Lewis-Carlisle, IPFW
    Jessica Pike, OU
    Jennifer Warkenthien, SDSU
    Julia Whitted, IUPUI

    Second team:
    Mariana Camargo, ORU
    Gina Hugelier, WIU
    Melissa Jeltema, OU
    Alysa Klein, UMKC
    Chazny Morris, UMKC

    Honorable mention:
    Maria Boever, SDSU

    Re: Summit League Postseason Awards

Have to admit I'm a little disappointed. Bue is a very good player, so I don't begrudge her the POY award, particularly since she stood out on a team with very few stars. You could argue that if you took her away, NDSU would likely have lost 10 more games. But you could also argue that she might play half as many minutes if she played on SDSU instead of NDSU. I thought Lewis-Carlisle was easily the best player I saw all year on the opposing teams.

But seriously: Boever and Verdegan get honorable mention? And no sign of Ketty anywhere. No Macie Michaelson on the all newcomer team?

I guess we suffer because we have 10 really good players (more than that, really). If we had three, they'd all get high honors. AJ, of course, deserves coach of the year every year in my book.

I guess we'll have to just be satisfied with a dominating performance and the most important team honor: Conference champions.
    Holy nutmeg!

I agree with you on that. She was tough to stop in the game I saw.

Technically, wouldn't the entire team be conference newcomers? Maybe the voters just didn't know what to do with all those Jackrabbits.

          Re: Summit League Postseason Awards

Unfortunately, these are generally INDIVIDUAL awards, in a TEAM sport. Jacks demonstrated that of our top 8/10, that it didn't matter on the pace of the Jacks' success who was in there.

Take the other teams' player on the Summit League first or second team out of their team's game, and there was a noticable fall off in production for that team.

Kristin Rotert deserved 6th player award. She absolutely bedazzled opponents, and changed games with her lites out 3's.

Congrats to Jenn/Kristin, Andrea, Maria, and especially to a coach who melds such a solid team of the components. This Rabbits team truly is greater than the sum of the parts. No other Summit League team could say that, and that teaming made the largest difference in our success!

Go Jacks! Best of success in the WNIT.

I think Macie got left off because of playing time. She only played over 1/2 the game in 5 conference games. In 13 games, she didn't play 1/2 the game. There are a few games where she put up less than 5 points with only a couple assists. That's not going to cut it when they have Juco's on the team.
Ketty suffered from her injury. After that her stat's were up and down.
Games 1-2- Missed because of injury.
              Games 3-6- 14 points and 11 rebounds(total).
              Games 7-8- 24 points and 4 rebounds.
              Games 9-12- 24 points and 11 rebounds.
I didn't look at the last 6 games.
I think the last 6 games were good enough but 38 points and 22 rebounds in 10 games doesn't cut it. That counts the 2 games she didn't play because they don't factor injuries in for All-Conference Teams.
These are from the conference games.

Maybe the people who voted forgot that the Summit add 3 new members last summer. I dont get it either, but like Montana Rabbit said we won the award for the best team. Its going to take time for SDSU and NDSU both to gain total respect in the Summit. Many of these people are still learning about the Dakotas, and winter and all that stuff.

                  Re: Summit League Postseason Awards

Also keep in mind the number of underclassmen we have compared to other schools and the familiarity other schools have with each other compared to with us. If a coach has seen a player for 3 or 4 seasons compared to two games against us, he probably has a little bias towards the older player all things considered.

The depth of the Jacks and lack of minutes to go around also hurt us. Ketty may be more efficient and put up more pts and rebounds per minute than other players in the league who were picked ahead of her, but how many of the voters are actually going to take the time to research that in-depth. They are just going to look at the season/conference averages to start out with, and looking at those we don't have many that stand out in the top 10.

                    Re: Summit League Postseason Awards

I think team play and unfamiliarity with us were two key factors (particularly with media... other than Terry there aren't many regular beat reporters who cover Summit League women's basketball).

Among coaches, SIDs etc., do you think maybe jealousy might have been a factor? We heard some less than flattering comments from some in the conference (like the IUPUI coach) after we handed them their rear ends. When you're the top team, petty people take whatever opportunity they might get to take you down a bit.

I really doubt it, just look at the stats and it makes sense how people are nominated. All the first team picks besides Warkenthein were in the top 10 in scoring for league play. All the first team picks besides Hugelier (15) were in the top 10 for scoring in league play. Boever was 13th in scoring and 14th in rebounds and made honorable mention. Hugelier was a SR. and best player from WIU so she got picked ahead of Boever. Verdegan was 5th in assists and didn't crack the top 30 in scoring, but was our leader at the point and made honorable mention.

Cornemann and Rotert could get consideration, but their numbers just weren't there for All-Conference.

Our balance hurts individual performance, but I'll take team success any day. I don't think there was anything sinister happening with the voting process.

                        Re: Summit League Postseason Awards

There were a few coaches at least that said good things about the Jacks. I beleive that Centenary, UMKC, and ORU's coaches all said nice things like they are the best team and it's to bad they can not represent the Summit League in the NCAA's. I would hope that IUPUI's coach is the exception.
