  • Jen and Maria Best Tandem in League

Would anyone disagree that Jen and Maria are the best post tandem in the league and beyond? Both averaging aroound 13 points and 7 rebounds a game. It must be hard for coaches draw up an effective defense against these two as their different styles of play are a match up problem any team they face.

Jen needs to find her range from outside again and then we'll really be a force to reckon with. Maria really shines at times. Both need to make at least 70% of their FT's. Then, I'll crown them best tandem in the league.

AJ has said they're encouraging her to play inside since they have others who can hit threes. We've seen her drive to the hoop a lot recently when she gets the ball at the top of the key. I think there's a concerted effort by everyone on the team not to throw up so many threes.

Agreed and I like that, but she needs to be able to step out there on occasion and knock a big one down. Especially when we are matched up against teams with similar players. Granted, thats probably not going to happen until the post-season. That said, I'm looking for us to win the conference and get another WNIT bid which means some pretty decent competition ahead. Remeber Wyoming last year? We need our bigs to hit some outside shots to compete against a team like them.

Considering Warkenthien is currently shooting .138% (4-29) and Boever is shooting .118% (2-17) for 3 pointers this season, I think that is probably a good suggestion by AJ.

We have plenty of other shooters on the team that are stroking it pretty good though.

          Rotert 44-107 .411
          Verdegan 27-80 .338
          Cornemann 15-43 .349
          Oistad 11-28 .393
          Meier 6-16 .375

Re: Jen and Maria Best Tandem in League

You normally don't expect your starting center and power forward to hit the 3's consistently. On the other hand, Jen shot above .300% from there last year and to have it drop to .138 is a big drop.
Sometimes it tough getting shots off when you're being guarded by players that are much taller. Hit a couple 3's and then you can use your speed to drive right by the bigger slower defenders. With Courtney not playing much somebody has to have a post presence.
I do think Jen might have to be careful on her power move to the hoop though. The Summit League officials don't call many charges but I think she could have been called for 1 or 2 when we played our last home stand. We had that 6'3" gal with 2 fouls at half time. In the second half we went right at her. I thought Jen went right into her and even threw a shoulder 1 time. They called a block both times. I guess I have to get used to the idea of 95% of the calls being blocks.
I think they would be in the running for the best tandem. With Jen being injured, she hasn't played as many games. I think she is still improving. That might be part of the problem with her shot. Less reps take a while to make up. They both hit the boards hard and put up solid numbers night in and night out. I was expecting those 2 and Ketty to make this team really tough this year.

How many times did Jen use that drive with a hesitation and then blow to the basket Saturday night? Pump fakes and drive? I love that and it is devistatingly effective. Other teams know that she can shoot it from 3 (especially if they look at last years stats) so they have to bring their bigger, slower players out to gaurd that. She has the ability to get opponents bigs in serious foul trouble with that approach.

Have to agree with AJ's logic though. We need more presence down low and there is no shortage of long-range bombers on this team. My point is that if you can create the mismatch outside the arc with Maria or Jen and exploit it, you have to do it!

I'm really looking forward to the stretch run with this team. You can really see them sense the fact that they are coming together as a unit and starting to play some great ball.

              Gonna be a fun finish!

Jen is a special kind of athlete for her size and strength. She is very fast up and down the floor, can put it on the floor AND can make moves with her back to the basket. And, as has been discussed here, she can also hit the three.

Maria Boever is our most consistent player. Again, she's very athletic for her size and all of the breakaway layups she's had this year shows you how fast she is up and down the floor. What I especially appreciate about her: She rarely misses inside the paint.

In his coach's show, AJ has singled those two out as two of the best inside players in the Summit League and as a devastating one-two punch inside because of their athleticism.

I think TV's blog post about who our best player is was right on target. We have an entire roster with talent. I would argue that our first 10 are better than anybody in NDSU's starting five. AJ and Melum have really done a great job of recruiting players and getting the most out of them when they get here.

And, oh yeah, we have Jill Young redshirting. Wow.
                Holy nutmeg!

JackMD, better polish up that crown, as Jen is shooting .878 and Maria .733 from the foul line. Jen is also shooting .449 and Maria .530 from the floor this year. There are good posts in the league, but not a better tandem from what I have seen.

Thanks JacksRule for the numbers. I thought the two, particularly Jen were doing fine at the line, but was too lazy to go look it up on the stats on GOJACKS!

Re: Jen and Maria Best Tandem in League

I was looking at the Conference scoring leaders and here they are. Jen is not listed in the official conference leaders because she has to have played in 75% of the teams games. If she plays in both games this weekend she will qualify for the scoring leaders. I added her to the list anyway.

                      Code:

                      Rank Name School Ave. Pts./Game

                      1. Lewis-Carlisle IPFW 19.4
                      2. Morris UMKC 17.1
                      3. Pike Oakland 16.4
                      4. Bue NDSU 16.3
                      5. Klien UMKC 14.5
                      6. Hardin Oral Roberts 13.9
                      7. Warkenthien SDSU 13.2
                      8. Camargo Oral Roberts 13.0
                      9. Whitted IUPUI 12.9
                      10. Boever SDSU 12.7
Lewis-Carlisle is averaging 31.4 minutes a game, where Warkenthein is averaging 21.2 minutes a game. Since SDSU does not play anyone over 30 minutes a game I adjusted the scoring average assuming everyone in the conference played 31.4 minutes a game. Here is the new scoring leaders based upon playing 31.4 minutes a game.

                      Code:

                      Rank Name School Ave. Pts./Game

                      1. Warkenthien SDSU 19.7
                      2. Lewis-Carlisle IPFW 19.4
                      3. Pike Oakland 17.7
                      4. Jeltma Oakland 16.6
                      5. Morris UMKC 16.4
                      6. Whitted IUPUI 16.0
                      7. Bue NDSU 15.8
                      8. Boever SDSU 15.3
                      9. Klien UMKC 15.0
                      10. Rotert SDSU 15.0
I also took a look at the rebounding leaders this is how they would rank if they were ranked by the frequency of rebounds.

                      Code:

Rank Name School Time it takes to get one rebound

                      1. Jeltma Oakland 3 Minutes 6 seconds
                      2. Warkenthien SDSU 3 Minutes 15 seconds
                      3. Westwood SUU 3 Minutes 22 seconds
                      4. Whitted IUPUI 3 Minutes 23 seconds
                      5. Cann IUPUI 3 Minutes 43 seconds
                      6. Voelker Oral Roberts 3 Minutes 50 seconds
For this comparison, I only looked at the top 5 leading rebounders in the conference and compared them to Jen. There may be others that are rebounding the ball at a higher frequency I did not check everyone's stats in the league.

Warkenthien is scoring one point every minute and 37 seconds. This is leading the conference and she has one rebound every 3 minutes 15 seconds. This is second best in the conference. Based upon this criteria, I think she should be given strong consideration for Summit League Player of the Year honors.

But considering she hasn't recieved the Summit League Player of the Week honors a single time there is no way she'll get it. Rotert is the only person our our team that has recieved that award which seems really strange.

You could look at that in a positive sense too, we are leading the Summit League by 2 full games and yet we've only had 1 player of the week.

                        Balanced? Very much so.

I don't think you will find two other posts (on the same team) in the league that are averaging in double digits (Jen 13.2 & Maria 12.7 ppg) (Jen 6.5 & Maria 6.1 rpg). Maria is also second in the league in field goal average shooting .537%. Guess limited minutes factors into the player of the week honors, but I will take 1st place in the league over personal honors.

But IUPUI's coach said depth didn't matter. After we ran her team off the floor with our depth.

I know that this isn't just conference stats but how about IUPUI. They have 2 posts that are putting up solid numbers.
                              Whitted- 12.9(points) and 7.5(rebounds)
                              Cann- 12.3(points) and 9.5(rebounds)
They don't shoot like Jen & Maria but they put up solid numbers. I just thought that those 2 players were solid.
