    The Argus write-up:

Shooting woes doom SDSU at W. Illinois

The South Dakota State women missed out on an opportunity to gain ground on the best team in the Summit League after falling to Western Illinois 67-60 on Monday in Macomb, Ill.

SDSU shot 15 percent from 3-point land and 35 percent from the field to drop to 4-2 in the conference (11-6 overall). WIU holds the top spot at 5-0 (7-9 overall).

The Jacks started on a cold streak, hitting just two of their first 19 shots from the field. That allowed Western Illinois to take its biggest lead of the game, 24-7, at the 10:12 mark. But after a 14-5 rally, the Jacks went into halftime down 36-23.

SDSU quickly grabbed the momentum early in the second half, trimming the deficit to single digits in the first two minutes. The Jacks scored seven straight points to tie the game at 46-all on a Kristin Rotert 3-pointer with 10:44 remaining. After holding their only lead of the night at 55-54, SDSU gave up a nine points in a row and was unable to recover.

Likely the same reason Schutt doesn't play much. Coach puts more priority on offensive type players than defensive specialists.

Then explain why Morgan Meier starts and played 22 minutes. She is the player AJ has always proclaimed as the defensive specialist.

True, coach has proclaimed Morgan a defensive specialist, but this year she is also shooting the three at 43%. She is having a great year.

Somehow I think you are way off on this. Ketty is more than capable of scoring. She was a starter prior to her injury and played in the regular rotation as a freshman last year. So, I would seriously doubt if she is suddenly not playing because she is a defensive specialist.

I agree Ketty is capable of scoring at will when she is at 100%. Currently something is messing that up. Her shooting % is off and until she gets it back others will play more.
I still feel though that she is one of the best defenders the Jacks have on the team. Her physical abilities and court awareness is amazing. She can guard nearly every possition on the floor.
She will soon be back to full strength and hopefully without pain.

I have to admit that I was wrong about SDSU's record from here on out. I know that when you shoot that many 3's, you can get burnt. I just didn't see the Juniors and Seniors shooting 1 for 16 from 3. I figured they would be cold some nights but I didn't think they would all be cold on the same night(except for Rotert).
Oh well, it's time to get a couple nice wins at home.

                    Re: Western Illinois

I think part of the reason we shoot so many 3's is that we are not doing a good job of getting entry passes to our inside players in a good position to score. Our 4 ball-handling guards( Verdegan,Muckenhirn,Michelson and Anderson) have 47 assists and 48 turnovers in our conference games.

Excellent point, rep for you. It is very frustrating when you can't get the ball entered into the post. It can lead to "post" players taking outside shots that are clearly a lower percentage for them and takes them out of the paint for rebounds.

Also,Maria and Jenn have a high number of turnovers partly because many of the entry passes are not in a spot that is easy for them to handle. In the games I've seen in person and on the Summit feeds, they get passes that are tough to handle or are put up for grabs between them and the defender.

two great posts in a row, wish I could give rep points for both, but alas, the rules do not allow.

Not trying to argue either point but I think Ketty prefers to take shots when they come versus creating her own shot, if that makes sense. She is a great defender, rebounder, and when needed can score but I don't think Ketty sees herself as the person who needs the ball when we need a bucket. Do I think the same? I don't. I think Ketty should try to be more active on the offensive end. I want to see her take her defender off the dribble and look to shoot more. I think AJ expects the same but I could be wrong.

I guess I'm trying to say that I think AJ is looking for more from Ketty on the offensive end and I'm not sure she is ready for that, yet. Maybe I'm way off, I should probably just ask Ketty or her dad the next time I see them. For me, she is one of the most sound and exciting players on our team if not in the Summit League.
