Sounds good! I will see you at the bar after our women make the big dance in 09!

      Re: Jill Young

Since she accepted a scholarship she has to sit out a year if she would of been planning to walk-on and had transfered before the season started she wouldn't have to sit out. She is enrolled at SDSU I have heard conflicting news after that.
      I have heard.
She has been offered a scholarship and has to sit out a year.
She will pay her way this year and accept a scholarship next year to SDSU and participate.
She is going to SDSU and will not even be on the basketball team this year and make a decision later.

Hopefully the moderators will let me use this message to kill several birds with one stone:

        (1) For better or worse, I am the "real" Kurt Evans, SDSU alumnus, originally from Wessington Springs.

        (2) The anecdotes I've posted in the "best player" thread about my personal interactions with past SDSU basketball players have all been based on true stories, including those that have been removed from the board.

        (3) In hindsight, I think I may have overreacted when "jackmd" suggested that posting those anecdotes was "bizarre"...

        (4) I apologize.

        (5) By ridiculous coincidence, I saw Jill's parents about an hour ago. Her dad told me more than I'd be comfortable posting here, but I think I can say this much: If I understood him correctly, Jill has accepted an SDSU basketball scholarship and can practice and travel with the team--"everything but play"--this year.

I have heard this but I have also heard that the NCAA may be investigating her because she may have talked to the assistant coach that recruited her after he left to U.N.I. and she may have participated at a practice at S.D.S.U. before she was given an official release. What I have heard from more then one source (other message boards and a friend of Jill's) is that she was given a verbal release from her coach but she talked to a U.N.I. coach (the one that recruited her to Creighton) and practiced at S.D.S.U. before an official release was granted.

You know how the NCAA works anything that makes sense doesn't to them and they have to investigate every little thing that might be out of line. The way I see it the most that would happen would be a game suspension I don't see S.D.S.U. getting in any trouble. but who knows when the NCAA is involved its anybodies guess.

              Re: Jill Young

Would this be a NCAA issue or a Letter of Intent issue? The Letter of Intent program is administered by the SEC, NOT the NCAA.

I think what the question is did she have contact with a coach from another D-I team before she was released from her scholarship. Who is in charge of that I do not know I was assuming it was the NCAA because I would assume they would have there noise in it someway or another.

I think the organization that would investigate (if such an incident were to occur) would depend on the athlete's enrollment status. The National Letter of Intent (NLI), by the way, is a legal contract. Without a proper release, an athlete breaking the contract (for example, by not spending an entire academic year at the institution) would lose one year of eligibility AND be required to spend an entire academic year at another NLI-abiding institution (such as SDSU) before being eligible for competition. If a coach were to recruit a NLI-signed student, than the NCAA would become involved.

                    Re: Jill Young

Here's a similar case that I posted the other night but deleted because it still wasn't clear that Jill had left Creighton. Now that it appears more than apparent I will repost it.

Mandy Morales, now at U. of Montana, transferred from Arizona State University to Montana before school started in the fall of 2005 (or 2004? can't remember). ASU released Mandy from her scholarship and Mandy still had to sit out a year without losing a year of eligibility. An athlete can get out of a Letter of Intent while they are still in high school if the coach that recruits them leaves. Case in point: Amber Harris, North Central, IN. Signed a LOI with Purdue in the fall of 2005 but when Kristy Curry left for Texas Tech, Amber was released from her LOI and was able to reopen her recruiting process.

In some cases, a school can be defiant and not release a student from their scholarship or create limits for which school an athlete can attend. When Emily Neimann transferred from Baylor to UCSB, the school said she couldn't talk to any other Big 12 schools.

And finally, let's look at a case in our own backyard. When Ramsey Kavan transferred from Notre Dame, she wasn't released from her scholarship. In that case, she couldn't talk to any other colleges, she could transfer wherever she wanted but with the risk of the college coach at her prospective school not having any knowledge of her going there until she was a student enrolled there.

                      Re: Jill Young

The way I understand it is the only way they don't have to sit out a year is if the coach or NCAA releases them before they ever get on campus. The problem I am hearing about Jill is she did participate in summer camps and may have even participated in fall practices. Since she never played a game she can retain all 4 years of eligibility but has to sit out a year via transfer rule.

Whatever the circumstances, having Jill Young at SDSU is a great development, even if she has to sit out a year. She's a great player and, from what I'm told, a classy young woman. Watching her play will be great fun. I wish she would have committed to the Jacks right away, but she is welcome regardless.

Per the honorary head of the Yankton Jackrabbit club and a parent of one of the women's BB players:

"Point of interest: I have been asked if Jill Young is coming to
SDSU, it is true Jill Young played HS ball at Mitchell Christian. She is
the current record holder for most points scored in SD girls BB
history. She originally signed at Creighton. The assistant coach that
recruited her left for UNI and she asked to be released. Her release was
granted. She is officially a Jackrabbit. She will red shirt this year."

I received this via e-mail today.

This is an awesome development for SDSU. I personally think she would pry have come into SDSU and challenged immediately for a starting spot. Obviously she can't and adding a red-shirt year where she can add some strength and adjust to the college game is going to make her an even bigger threat.

Having her shooting ability around the perimeter is going to open things up down low. I believe when she graduates from SDSU she could be the best shooter ever at SDSU. She is nothing short of remarkable.

With Jill Young I think a red-shirt is the best thing for her. Jill is a good quick basketball player that can shoot lights out but shes played South Dakota Class B basketball and is relatively small in stature. A year in the weight room will be noticed when she is playing against good defenses and the ref aint calling every tickey tack foul.

This is a good development for State, but I don't think you have ever watched Ms. Young play. She is not a "quick basketball player." In fact, her footwork is a little slow which is something she can work on during her redshirt year. I would also believe that the footwork of Summit League players is going to be a little quicker than Mitchell Christian High School basketball.

Have you ever personally watched her play?
