  • Exhibition : SW Minnesota St vs SDSU 6pm Frost Arena

It is time for the season to begin. The team will be available for meeting the public following the game. K-8 kids are invited to attend the exhibition free and enjoy various activities. The point guard designee should be revealed tonight to answer who follows Meyer and Gylten at that position. We should also see the freshmen on the floor unless there may be a redshirt player. The Mustangs were .500 last season and they are picked to finish 12th in the NSIC. It is a great day/evening to watch the WBB return with some solid basketball. Go Jacks!!
Best to remember these are kids and they are doing everything they can to entertain us, be scholars, and all in all be great humans. Jackedforlife

As to not make a mess so to speak I'll pose this question here. Assuming we have Myah, Tori, Haleigh, and Paiton healthy they are the first four starters I would assume. Who's the fifth?

Kalli would be considered if one the above mentioned becomes the point. I am hoping that is not the case. Kalli can get her quality minutes off the bench while performing at a high level which is great having starter quality player in relief. Kalli shoots, rebounds, passes, and blocks shots. The Jackrabbits need another guard to have available for a stronger rotation.

If the coaches think that one of the freshman guards are ready, they can go that route. Or if they don't want to put the pressure of starting on them right away, they can start Theisen and then bring the freshmen in early off the bench. Hopefully Gylten is ready soon and this all becomes a moot point.

Ellie Colbeck is one who I think Jacks fans will be especially pleased with to strengthen the guard situation. Another steal from Central Minnesota who can do it all.

I would be fine with letting her cut her teeth running point against a DII team. I don't think she's a true PG but she ran the point for her HS team, so can try and get by in an emergency situation with her.

Well the thing with those 4 is you can play VERY LITERALLY any other player on the team with that group and still have a very good team

my guess for tonight is Kallie, which meant timmie and myah bring the ball up the floor. if that is the case Myah is actually the best PG in that group. she can truly play any spot 1-5 and the other 3, PB, tori, and timmie can all play 3 spots. so you can do anything you want with that group

the safe, simple bet is Kallie

but i have not heard any BIG news about practice. it is possible some/ any other player has made a move forward. there is ONLY ONE player on the roster that i feel sure will get little playing time this year, and i think even that has the potential to turn out to be wrong. I think N Nielsen is the least likely to play this year. literally every other player has very good potential to play meaningful minutes this year

so this is not really an answer to your question, but i will come at this a little different

what will be the break down of minutes played this year

i will call them the Big 4 will lead in minutes but that is only because the two PG are starting with injuries, otherwise we would have the Big 6. as long as those 6 have relatively good health they lead in minutes

IF they all were and all stayed healthy you could theoretially play a lot of games with those 6 getting almost all the minutes just because of the versatility of the Big 4. but that has never been AJ style and this team has too many other talented players for him to change that philosophy this year

one of Kallie or B Meyer will be number 7. the safe bet is Kallie because she is more of a known, but it will not be a shock at all if Meyer is ready now or becomes ready during the season to be the first big off the bench and/ or maybe even start a game or two, just to give someone a little break. an interesting note on Meyer. when we first started hearing about her i thought she would come in ready to go on defense. she blocked a lot of shots in high school. but i have heard she comes in FAR FAR more ready to shoot the 3 and play on the perimeter than any recent-ish post player i can remember for us. sounds a little shannon schlagel but a lot better athlete

next the two freshman guards have a big chance to put themselves into the rotation with the top two PG beginning hurt. from what i have heard they might be good enough to force themselves into the conversation without the injuries

so anyway that gives us the big 4 plus 2, Kallie, and the 3 freshman. best guess that is the top 10 in minutes played

HOWEVER, Vlastuin, Byom, and Neshiem are all good enough to start on many many teams and maybe one or some combo of the 3 is ready to make a move and grab more PT. or maybe an injury gives them a shot. regardless i bet they all worked hard to give themselves the best shot possible and that forced the group in front of them to get better also or lose PT to them

i would say Maddie has the best avenue to PT out of the 3. first because i think there is more of an opening for a guard, especially with the current injuries. but also because in the past she showed pretty elite downtown sniper skills and there is almost always a place for that on a team

              finally N Nielsen

so to answer your question, if someone told me i could have no ice cream until i told them who would be the 5th Beattle tonight, i would guess Kallie. but minus the two injured PGs and Nielsen, it could be literally any other player on the team

If we are going with a big lineup and the popular answer for the 5th starter until Dru/Paige come back is Kallie, than why not Brooklyn Meyer? I think we are underestimating how good she is. She is also very versatile with the ability to drift out to the three point line and play inside, which may be a more valuable compliment to Paiton.

The answer to the trivia question was Mathiowetz. Thiesen, Meyer, and Colbeck first off the bench..

Basically an 8 person rotation with a splash of Madison Vlastuin. Top 8 all look really good, so likely a solid 10 person rotation with a lot of up tempo game when DG and PM are back.

                      halftime jacks 61- 37

jacks are sure scorning a lot but probably not happy with the defense. SMSU shooting pretty hot from 3. last year they took an incredible 607 3s for a team that shot only slightly over 30% from 3. it sure feels like they are shooting better than 30% tonight

sounds like everyone is comfortable Maddie M sounded like a bad TO late in half followed by maybe a dumb foul turned into a 3pt play for smsu, but she had some points. i think she might have been the leading rebounder and had what sounded like a very nice assist

Myah hits first shot of game a 3. she is 6 of 7 from field with 5 3s. Kolbeck is i believe 3 of 3 from 3 with 12 points
Kallie off bench with 8 points on almost no shots. 2 or 3 i believe

when they introduced Maddie and Elly K they gave their HS point totals. i know they had 3000+ and 2000+ respectively, but WOW i believe they said Maddie 3760ish and Elly 2497. those are ridiculous totals and i know this is a D2 team but so far they sound ready to pick up where they left off

no minutes yet for Byom, Neshiem, or Nielsen. i REALLY think Byom and Neshiem are talented but we are just too loaded in the front court. if they can hang in there, there are probably a few more minutes available next year. i would totally expect if the score continues with the current cushion that those 3 will get some decent minutes in second half

Timmer and Maddie M have missed several 3s each but we know that timmer will not get discouraged and Maddie seems to be contributing in other ways

Timmer 2 of 6 from field but also 4 assists and 4 boards

another good sign, jacks 11 of 11 from the FT line

Myah 10-11 with 7 threes. Has to be a great feeling for her to finally be healthy going into a season. Sounds like Colbeck is having a nice game as well.
