  • GDT: SDSU Jackrabbits vs ORU Golden Eagles @ Mabee Arena

Saturday afternoon at 2 pm is the tip for the women's game in Tulsa. The Jackrabbits have had Mitsi Cussen team's number as they have won 15 in a row. ORU was 4th choice on preseason prediction and they are tied for 4th place with F Hawks. The Golden Eagles are 8-1 at Mabee and 3-0 in conference at home. The Golden Eagles average 67.4 points on about 38% and they outrebound by 5/game. The Jackrabbits could bring defense to Mabee in another game. They also improved the last game to over 50% shooting at Macomb. This a game to spread the gap reinforcing the 2nd place. Go Jacks!!

Listening to AJ post game, I really like how AJ assesses things, as was noted, we didn't have our best start, but rather than press too hard and fall further behind, they pressed forward and started to execute better and got to within 4 at the end of the first quarter. The 2nd quarter that continued and we pulled away. He also said confidence is acquired not so much from continued "pats on the back", but rather the players playing well and realizing that themselves, realizing that "hey, we're pretty good , and when we play this way, we have a chance to win just about every game, no matter who we play.

I didn't quote his exact words, as unfortueately I don't pocess a photographic memory, but words to that effect. That's so true, and he and all the coaching staff do a great job of keeping the teams spirits up when needed, yet pointing out ways to get better and let them grow in their confidence through their own hard work and achievements. We are so lucky to have the coaching staff we do, many teams aren't as blessed in that regard as we have been, and all the great players who come here and believe in this system that has shown such great success through hard work and dedication.

They recovered just fine after that “here we go again” 8-point first quarter filled with awful turnovers and missed open shots.

It was interesting watching that announcer-less video feed. The only audio was the PA guy and the timeout “hype man”, both of whom did their best to keep up the excitement while an empty stadium watched a blowout. It has to be hard to announce player names post-score with all the gusto of an NBA PA man when your team is down by 25 and the stands are deserted.

It was a decent game after the first quarter. It may have been the noise the 1303 attendees were making early! Ha! The Jackrabbits did not incur the same foul trouble early like the WIU game. The overall shooting of 44% was good and the 90% free throw accuracy was good. Misti had trouble bringing in the reserves late and the final was much closer than the game could have been if the SDSU starter/rotation had been in place. It was a good thing for the experience for the reserves though. It was great to see Larson getting some offense today and highlighting her game a bit. The third place team will have 4 losses compared to the 1 loss for SDSU solidly in 2nd place. 6 games left in conference with only 2 games in North Dakota and 4 home games should make the Jackrabbits a heavy favorite to earn a top 2 seed.

I like the comments about AJ and his way of assessing and bringing the team along. We have done the good team, losing to USD, but ready to battle them by tournament time before. Can they make enough progress to do that again or is this the year that USD is too good for AJ and the Jack's to close that gap? Here's hoping they can.

Never fear, AJ has them at their peak usually by the time the SLT comes around, let's hope this year is no exception.

I have little doubt AJ will have us at our best as we near the end of the regular season. But let's face it...this is USD's year, unless they blow it. They have a team capable of making it to the Sweet 16 without doubt. Now, however, if we Myah had been available all season, I would have believed we would be right there with this. Of course, we don't. IF the Yotes finish the season like they should, we should not be hanging our heads, because this team has recovered nicely from the losses we had in talent from last year.
