Jackrabbits face Texas State, Mitchell's Hoffman twins in road game today

It seems just yesterday that twins Jenna and Jeana Hoffman burst onto the South Dakota basketball scene as tiny seventh-grade girls.

They're now 19-year-old women, living nearly 1,000 miles away from Mitchell at Texas State in San Marcos. Gone are the Kernel uniforms the duo wore for six years, replaced with the Bobcats' maroon, black and gold.

"It was different not being a Kernel," Jenna said. "But we're adjusting for the challenge to play at the next level."

The freshmen guards get a visit today from some old friends as the South Dakota State women (5-2) head south for a 7 p.m. game against the Bobcats (2-4) in San Marcos, Texas.

So far, it's been a good start in the new locale for the sisters who rewrote the Mitchell record books. Jeana has started all six of Texas State's games this year, logging 30 minutes a contest. She's averaging 4.2 points and 2.8 rebounds. . . .

Jackrabbit players Heather Sieler, Sarita DeBoer and Isha Vanterpool are well-acquainted with the Hoffmans, having often played against them while attending high school in Huron. The twins also played with SDSU freshman Courtney Grimsrud on a few all-star teams over the summer.

Next year, Texas State comes to Brookings to play SDSU in what could be a grand homecoming for the twins. Today's game probably won't be as big a deal since the teams will be meeting on the Hoffmans' new turf.

"We're going to approach this just like any other game," Jeana said.

    Game Tonight

Tipoff: The SDSU women's basketball team faces Texas State at 7 p.m. today in San Marcos, Texas.

    Radio: KJJQ-AM 910.

Go Jackrabbits, beat the Bobcats! ;D

I have seen the Texas State Bobcat women play. If the
Jacks don't blow them out I will be very surprised.
The Bobcats are not a very good team.

More importantly, the Jackrabbit women are a good team. I expect a strong performance out of SDSU.

          Re: Texas State

I hope we absolutely crush this team tonight. The Hoffmans on their BIO list the University of South Dakota and Idaho State as their finalists before they chose Texas State. I have not seen the Hoffman twins play but with their credentials they obviously have talent. I had heard (not confirmed) we were interested in one but not both of them and they were interested in a package deal only which caused some schools to back off. I believe they do a lot of the same things well and not sure how seriously they considered SDSU or we considered them.

I had heard that we had little interest in them. In WBB SDSU usually gets whoever they want.
I too really want to lay a Texas size whoopin' on TSU, I was trying to figure a way I could go to this game, but but the 4 1/2 hour drive down I35 is a bit too time consuming this week. Depot Radio 910 will have to suffice tonight.
            Go Jacks !!!

              Re: Texas State

I don't think they were as good as it was thought to be.  Look at their stats so far.  Jeana is avering about 4 and 3, and that is the better of the two twins.  This is for a team much worse than SDSU.  Andrea Verdegan is averging about 6 and 3 and that is in a much more limited role because SDSU is a much more talented team.  I don't think either Hoffman would see more than 5 minutes for the Jacks this year.  Hopefully, the game tonight proves me right.

I hear that it was down to USD and Texas St. for the final 2. The Hoffmans have a sister that ran track at USD and that is probably why USD was in conention and not us. I really hope we beat their a$$ tonight because I hear that they said they would only choose a DI school if it was a good D-I team, they wouldn't choose a D-I team just to say they were going D-I, it had to be a legitimate D-I school. Heck if they wanted to go D-I so bad why wouldn't they have chosen us. We are a lot better than Texas St. and we are going to prove that tonight. Maybe they just wanted to live in Texas I guess I can't fault them for that if thats what they want to do. I really hope they didn't choose Texas St. because they thought they were better than us, that would make me mad. Just because they have been D-I longer doesn't make them better. We've been better for years. I'm putting the spread at 23 tonight, you guys going over or under.

                  Re: Texas State

I suspect some USD, Augie, or NCC sympathizer was in the ears about SDSU and its "selfish" move to DI.  I think they would have been nice role players for the Jacks.  Instead, they are 2000 miles from home playing for a terrible team with little to be excited about.  Perhaps academic reasons played a part.  When it comes to teenagers its often the influence of someone with more experience that sways the decision.  If that someone doesn't like SDSU because of our success, they may have provided a little biased advice.

Looks like we will be okay without them, but I think they set a bad example by leaving the state for a DI school with less to offer academically and athletically than SDSU.  This is only my opinion and I don't expect anyone to share it, but I bet some of you do.

As for the spread, sounds about right. However, on the road, I wouldn't bet to cover over 20. Too much uncertainty regarding officials, facilities, fatigue, etc..

You might be right about that spread, I've moved it down to 18 and a half. I gotta remember that this isn't at Frost. Now this is an accurate spread.

                      Re: Texas State

jackmd: I know this is hard to believe, but good athletes went to schools other than SDSU before the move up, and they will continue to do so after the move. I think you can rest your paranoia for the day.

As for on the court, where would they fit in AJ's system? They are 5'7" guards that are very good all around players, but there were questions about how that would translate to the next level for the last couple of years. I never thought they would be at SDSU with or with out the move up.

                        Re: Texas State

Mike, I agree with your assesment. I know of some who are huge fans of the Hoffman's who overestimate their ability to dominate at the next level and who think the Jacks made a mistake at not persuing them. I'm not in that camp and suspect tonights game and next years game at Frost might reinforce why Aaron felt he had some better options at this level.

Maybe I implied something I shouldn't have. I suspect the biggest reason is just the one you supply above. They wouldn't really fit in at the current time. That said, I bet A.J. would have found room for one of them if willing to sacrafice some playing time early in their college careers. In fact, Sieler could use another ball handler to help this year.

I guess my biggest question is; why go to Texas St.? No one needs to answer this, it doesn't matter. In fact, I had totally forgotten about them until it was brought up in the article regarding tonights matchup. No paranoia today.
