Women Get Another DI Win, 89-61 At Texas State
SAN MARCOS, TX - South Dakota State posted its third victory of the season over a Division I opponent as the Jackrabbits rolled past Texas State 89-61 Monday night in non-conference women’s basketball.
Shannon Schlagel led the Jacks with 20 points while Megan Vogel had 16. Heather Sieler had eight points, 10 assists and seven steals.
SDSU led 45-29 at the half, then opened the second half with a 10-0 run as Vogel started it with a three, then Heather Sieler hit back-to-back baskets after steals, and Dickmeyer drained a trey for a 55-29 lead.
SDSU shot 45 per cent, 30 of 66, while TSU shot 40 per cent, 23 of 57. TSU had a 40-39 rebound advantage but the Jackrabbit defense contributed to 28 turnovers by Texas State, now 2-5 for the season. SDSU scored 33 points off TSU turnovers.
SDU hit 11 three-point shots in the game, including two in the first half by freshman reserve Isha Vanterpool which helped the Jacks take an early lead.
TSU opened the game with a basket by Ashley McGruder, but Vogel scored SDSU’s first six points as the Jacks took the lead for good at 4-2. They led 14-6 before TSU closed within 16-15.
Then came the first of Vanderpool’s three-pointers. She added a two-point basket, then hit her second three with 6:49 left in the half to make it 26-17.
Brooke Dickmeyer finished with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting, all three-point attempts.
Tamara Thompson led TSU with 17 points.
