    Re: USC Trojans

USC 65, SDSU 58....19 seconds left, Jacks take a time out.

Jacks playing USC very tough...much closer game than even the close score shows

that's it, sports fans....the team did well and there were ways they could have won. Sounded like USC was very physical so I'm sure that will help the Jacks in the long run.

SDSU women fall short 66-59 in physical battle on the coast

LOS ANGELES - The puffy, red scrape underneath Shannon Schlagel's eye said everything.

The senior forward and the South Dakota State women endured as brutal a battle as they have had in some time, falling 66-59 to the University of Southern California in basketball on Saturday.

"I've never seen our players end up on the ground as much as they did today," said SDSU coach Aaron Johnston, repeating the phrase he whispered in one of the referees' ears late in the game. "I don't know whether it was that we were being fouled. It was just physical. This was by far the most physical game we've played all year."

Brynn Cameron tied a school record with six 3-pointers for the Women of Troy, including the backbreaker with 1:35 left in the game. The freshman guard finished with a game-high 20 points.

Schlagel had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Jackrabbits, who fell to 6-3 on the year and closed out an eight-game road swing with a 3-3 record against Division I opponents.

"I just think that we didn't execute the way we needed to," Schlagel said. "We knew they had a couple shooters, and we weren't getting on them." . . .

USC (5-2) pulled away with 3-pointers. Meghan Gnekow, who finished with 13 points, hit a deep, one-handed push shot from behind the arc that made it 56-50. Then, with the Jacks grasping to stay close, Cameron canned her sixth 3-ball of the game for the knockout blow.

"Cameron, tonight, really shot the ball well," Johnston said. "They had, as a team, been shooting below 30 percent from the 3-point line all year. We talked about before the game that she could be the one player who we felt had the ability to step up and make open shots. We just didn't find her."

Saturday's game had the characteristics of an old-fashioned slugfest, with players getting bumped to the floor, thumped in the face and jumped on by multiple defenders. There were 42 fouls called, but easily double number could have been whistled.

USC's long-armed, quick-footed defense proved problematic for the SDSU guards, blocking five shots. But the Jackrabbits stuck close by shooting a blistering 57.1 percent in the half. Sarita DeBoer, Schlagel and Dickmeyer combined to make 9 of 11 shots.

"Nothing surprised me about them, because I knew they were good," USC's first-year coach Mark Trakh said. "What impressed me is the way they play together and how skilled their players are and their knowledge of the game." . . .

Can't wait to see USC in Frost next year! Go State! ;D

That rematch alone justifies buying season tickets for next year.
