  • Best SDSU women's team

How do you guys feel this years team stacks up against our teams from the recent past? I know some have said that they think this is our best team yet. Personally I think our National Championship team was the best. It might be kind of hard but I would like to see if anyone can rank our teams from the last four years. Here's how I think I would:
    1. 2002-03 National Champs
    2. This years team.
    3. Last years team
    4. 2001-02
I had a very hard time putting the last three in order. I'm not positive that I think this years team is better than last years team. After I see us play NDSU I will get a much better idea.

Well, OK...I think this year's team would whup the National Championship team. The big difference being that this year's team has played a tougher schedule against better competition.

Looking at the stats, I think this year's team mainly plays better defense. I thought they were shooting the 3 better but that is incorrect. (The 3's they hit are very timely, however).

    Selected stats (this year; 2002-03)
    Record: 12-3; 32-3
Points scored per game: 74.5; 85.7
Points allowed per game: 57.9; 62.6
    FG percentage: .436; .468
    FG allowed pct: .392; .381
    3pt percentage: .341; .359
    3pt allowed pct: .297; .303
    rebounds per game: 39.6; 45.1
reb. allowed per gm: 32.3; 32.1
    turnovers per game: 18.9; 17.6
opp. turnovers per game: 23.9; 20.1
    steals per game: 12.9; 11.2
steals given up per game: 9.7; 7.9

      1.  This years team
      PG  Sieler (jr)
      SG Brooke (sr)
      SF  Vogel (so)
      PF Shannon (sr)
      C  Sarita (sr)

All the pieces coming together, the freshman from our first championship run are now seniors.  Tons of experience and very talented underclassmen.

      2.  2002-03 Nat'l champs
      PG Sieler (fr)
      SG Cizek (jr)
      SF Davis (jr)
      PF Pater (sr)
      C  Shannon (so)

Very balanced team.  Gaining experience and good depth.  Sieler plays excellent defense.  Very fortunate shot propells us to nat'l championship.  (Had a great time in St. Joe's. ;D)

      3.  Last years team
      PG  Sieler (so)
      SG  Cizek (sr)
      SF  Davis (sr)
      SF  Vogel (fr)
      C  Shannon (jr)

No real center on this team, Shannon is a better fit at PF.  Sarita has played great this year.

      4.  2001-02
      PG  Shari Johnson (sr)
      SG  Cizek (so)
      SF Davis (so)
      PF Pater (jr)
      C  Shannon (fr)

Very young team, no depth at the gaurds (Bolden and Brooke and Megan Otter were freshman).  Shari did a great job leading a young team.

I think the biggest difference between this years team and NC team is Vogel. There are very few people as athletic as she is and also a well rounded player.

Very good point. She is one hell-uv-an athlete. The nat'l champ team had Pater, also one hell-uv-an athlete. She may be able to make up the difference between the two teams. I think the difference between the two teams is experience (shannon, sieler, sarita, bolden). They're all much better players now than a couple of years ago.

Pater is the one reason I would go with the National Championship team. She was a beast. Probably not as athletically gifted as Vogel, but meaner.

I believe AJ said on Craig and Mike that this years team was probably the best he had coached.   I only heard half of the statement so i hope i am not misquoting him.  Mike could you verify if possible.
