South Dakota State forward Shannon Schlagel has been named NCAA Division I Independent Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Schlagel, a 6-foot senior from Raymond, S.D., averaged 17 points and six rebounds in games last week at Texas State and Southern California. She scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed four rebounds against Texas State, then collected 14 points and eight rebounds versus USC.
For the week, Schlagel shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field, including 2-of-4 on three point attempts. She also made 12-of-20 free throw attempts, 60 percent, and added six steals, two assists and one blocked shot.
She has moved into fifth place on the Jackrabbit women's basketball career scoring list with 1,598 points and needs 24 points to pass Deb Van Klei (1,621 points from 1986-89) for fourth place. Schlagel also ranks third in career rebounds at SDSU with 886. . . .
