South Dakota State forward Shannon Schlagel has been named NCAA Division I Independent Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Schlagel, a 6-foot senior from Raymond, S.D., averaged 17 points and six rebounds in games last week at Texas State and Southern California. She scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed four rebounds against Texas State, then collected 14 points and eight rebounds versus USC.

For the week, Schlagel shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field, including 2-of-4 on three point attempts. She also made 12-of-20 free throw attempts, 60 percent, and added six steals, two assists and one blocked shot.

She has moved into fifth place on the Jackrabbit women's basketball career scoring list with 1,598 points and needs 24 points to pass Deb Van Klei (1,621 points from 1986-89) for fourth place. Schlagel also ranks third in career rebounds at SDSU with 886. . . .

Hey this is good news considering the BSC thing earlier this week. I have always been impressed with Shannon. The first time I watched her play, I could not help but think of the True Grit Movie of John Wayne. I thought Shannon resembled that actress who played the young lady in that movie. I sure some one will tell me the actress's name. No doubt about Shannon, she is a fine lady who is for real. She has made SDSU proud.

Kim Darby .... Mattie Ross
Edith Atwater .... Mrs. Floyd

Shannon is one heckuva player...she's always battling! A great person, too.

Kim Darby was the name I was looking for and Mattie Ross was the character, who was fiesty and determined in finding her father's killer via the help of Rooster Kockran played by John Wayne. I think we have seen four years of fiestyness and determination in Shannon's court play. I just thought Shannon bore a mild resemblence to Kim Darby. Shannon is going to be one star that we will not forget quickly. She has had a great career. I am sure she is the salt of the earth as a person.

Great Job Schlags! I am sure this will only be the first of many accolades for Shannon this season. Schlagel is an outstanding player and person! I know I have not played or practiced against many who are better or stronger. Schlagel made me a better player in the 2 years I played with her and against her in practice everyday. She will be breaking many SDSU WBB records this year and I could not think of someone better and more deserving to break them. Shannon is not afaid of much and I don't know many other girls who drive semi's on thier family farm. ;D ;D She is truely a one-of-a-kind person and so far she is doing a great job of leading the team to a great start in D1!

The Perik Jumpers are currently 4-3 in League Competition with a game vs. the Grasshoppers tonight! Currently, that puts us in 5th place in the League. In Dutch Basketball there is also a CUP Competition that takes place, and with a win last Wednesday we are now in the Semifinals of the CUP Competition. (The CUP competition is a seperate tournament from the regular league much like the World CUP or the European CUP with soccer.) For more information the Perik Jumpers do have a website: www.perikjumpers.nl The site is in Dutch, but you can click on the British flag and some articles are translated to English...not perfect grammer, but you can get the just of the game. Another website is www.basketball.nl which is all the leagues of men and women in Holland. If you are brave you can try to find your way around that Dutch site.

I actually get about 10 days off for Christmas and I am flying home on Tuesday. I won't be in time to make it to the women's game, but plan on going to the men's Holiday Tournament games. Schlagel wins again! I couldn't find a link on the jacks website but it was in the print edition of today's argus. Anyone know how close she is to Pater's scoring record?

I think its 32 points with 12 games to go, I hope she scores a lot in the two upcoming games against the Wisconsin schools, but it would be so nice to see her break it against NDSU in front of the big home crowd at Frost. Either way it is an unbelievable accomplishment to break Paters record.
