Jackrabbit winning streak ends at UWGB
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Hot shooting by Wisconsin-Green Bay and numerous South Dakota State turnovers proved to be a lethal combination as the Phoenix ended SDSU's four-game winning streak with an 86-52 women's basketball victory Tuesday at the Phoenix Sports Center.

With the loss, SDSU drops to 13-5 overall, including a 7-5 record against Division I opposition. UWGB, which has made three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and is again receiving votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Division I polls, improved to 15-2 overall.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going, with SDSU taking its final lead of the game at 19-18 on a basket by Brooke Dickmeyer with 7 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the first half. The Phoenix then ripped off a 23-3 run to close the half and take a 41-22 lead at intermission.

The Jackrabbits could not come up with a run of their own as they were only able to get back within 16 in the opening minutes of the second half after scoring the first five points of the half.

SDSU's 29 turnovers overshadowed a good shooting performance in which the Jackrabbits finished 21-of-40 from the field, 52.5 percent.

UWGB, meanwhile, bettered the Jackrabbits from the field by shooting 65.4 percent for the game, including a 16-of-22, 72.7 percent, effort in the second half.

The Phoenix also made 8-of-9 free throw attempts, 89 percent.

Five different players, including three reserves, reached double figures for UWGB. Nicole Soulis came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, with starting guard Abby Scharlow adding 18. Scharlow made 4-of-5 three-point attempts as UWGB made 10-of-16 three-point attempts as a team. Mary Kulenkamp added 13 points, while reserves Kayla Groh and Natalie Berglin chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

UWGB committed just 13 turnovers and had assists on 21 of their 34 baskets.

Megan Vogel led SDSU with 14 points, with 12 coming in the first half. Sarita DeBoer contributed 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.

Shannon Schlagel was held to seven points as her streak of 16 consecutive games in double figures for scoring was snapped. Schlagel did manage to up her career scoring total to 1,732 points, 16 points from overtaking the SDSU career scoring lead held by Melissa Pater (1,747 points from 2000-03).

The Jackrabbits held a 21-17 rebounding advantage, with Vogel pulling down a game-high six boards.

SDSU returns to home action Saturday by hosting undefeated North Dakota State (17-0) in the annual Corduroy Classic. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.

Re: Wisconsin-Green Bay Offical Game Thread

My only comment is "Lets take the Bison on Saturday". They are undefeated and have played only one D1 opponent, so need to get out and back the Jacks.

Re: Wisconsin-Green Bay Offical Game Thread

This was definitely a reality check for the Lady Jacks. They've been playing great, but with the exception of Rutgers, haven't played any of the truly elite D-I opponents this year. This isn't disparaging the Alabama and Kentucky wins (those teams are quite respectable major conference teams). But UWGB is a NCAA-tournament-tested team and played like it.

SDSU is pretty good, but needs to get better to seriously contend for top-25 status. That we can even reasonably discuss what State needs to do to get there is an enormous credit to AJ and this year's team. I think a WNIT bid is a reasonable and achievable goal for next year's team.

Best thing to do is learn from UWGB, grow, and thump the Bison.

Green Bay announcer commented he can't recall a team ever having 29 turnovers against the Phoenix.
