SDSU Women Defeat IPFW 90-73
FORT WAYNE, IN – All five starters scored in double figures and the bench contributed 22 points as South Dakota State University defeated Indiana University/Purdue University-Fort Wayne 90-73 Saturday afternoon.
Heather Sieler had a career high 19 points after sparking a first-half spurt which saw SDSU go on an 11-0 run to turn an 11-7 deficit into a 18-11 lead. Sieler scored five points in that run, and finished the half with three three-point baskets and 11 points as the Jacks led 40-26 at halftime.
IPFW closed within two at 53-51 on a three-pointer by Hilary O’Connell, but baskets by Christina Gilbert and Corrie Dickmeyer plus two free throws by Sieler pushed the margin back to eight, and the Jacks opened a 68-54 lead when Sarah Meckley hit a layup with 8:18 to play.
The Jacks shot 67 per cent in the second half (16x24) to finish the game at a season high 56 per cent, and were also 20-of-22 at the foul line for the game, 15-of-16 in the second half. SDSU had a 34-28 rebounding advantage.
Shanon Schlagel added 18 points, Sarita DeBoer had 11 points and 9 rebounds; while Megan Vogel and Steph Bolden scored 10 points each.
Johanna Lewis-Carlisle, a 5-6 freshman guard, had 27 points to lead the Mastadons.
SDSU is now 15-6 for the season including 8-6 against Division I competition. IPFW is 2-17. The Jacks will play at Northern State in Aberdeen Tuesday (Feb. 1).
