BROOKINGS - Once again, South Dakota State proved to be a less-than-hospitable host to a fellow in-state team.
Playing their third game in 12 days against a South Dakota school, the Jackrabbits controlled every aspect of their game against the University of Sioux Falls en route to a 102-47 victory Saturday night at Frost Arena.
SDSU took control early with four big runs in the first half, fueled by blazing outside shooting.
The Jacks connected on more than half of their 3-point shots in the first 20 minutes, making 10. They finished the game with 15 3-pointers.
That effort came 11 days after a school-record 16 3-pointers in a 32-point victory over Northern State and three days after they drained seven in a 35-point win against Si-Tanka.
Balancing the outside shooting was a transition game that produced nine first-half steals for SDSU.
"Tonight, we stepped up and played a complete game, both offensively and defensively," said SDSU forward Shannon Schlagel, who was 8-for-10 from the field for 23 points.
For Schlagel, a senior from Raymond, near Clark, it was another game, another record. She became the school's all-time leader in women's games played in a career with 129. The previous record was held by Schlagel's former teammate Brenda Davis, from 2000-03.
Schlagel also tops SDSU in career scoring, free throws and defensive rebounds.
Saturday's game also may be the last in-state game for SDSU for a while. Already, for next season, the state's three Division II schools - USD, Augustana and Northern State - have declined the chance to play SDSU.
With the vast majority of SDSU's games coming against Division I opponents next year, it is likely there will be no South Dakota opponents on the schedule for the Jacks. . . .
"We have a lot of respect for all the South Dakota teams," he added. "There's a lot of good basketball out there."
SDSU moved to 18-6 on the season; USF fell to 15-12. . . .
"(The Jacks are) just physical," said USF coach Katie Dailey. "We play physical in the (Great Plains Athletic Conference), but this doesn't compare. It was a good experience for our girls." . . .
SDSU hosts Doane on Wednesday, while USF next plays Briar Cliff.
This was a dominant win over a team with a couple of players with good pedigrees. The nice crowd of 2000+ was into the game from the beginning and few left even after it was a rout! Megan Vogel and Andrea Verdegan just keep getting better and better. Does anyone know why Courtney Grimsrud was not redshirted. lMO based on the limited minutes she has gotten she could have really benefited from a year to build her strength and coordination. At 6'2 She was rejected a number of times in the paint in the USF game and seemed to really struggle. I don't believe you see redshirting in the women's game as much as the men.
I thought i heard at one time that Courtney did not want to redshirt, or was very against it. This may be hearsay as i can't recall the source. I know that she is a very smart girl and may want to get her four years done and move onto bigger things.
